Atlantic 10 Conference: Day Two

BUFFALO, New York, February 23. FAMILIAR faces sit atop the medal stand after the second day of competition, as the Massachusetts men and the Richmond women sit atop the standings at the 2012 Atlantic 10 Men's & Women's Swimming & Diving Championships.

On the Men's side, Massachusetts leads with a total of 248 points, 47 points ahead of second-place St. Bonaventure. Rounding out the scoreboard is Xavier with 200, La Salle with 173, Saint Louis with 156, Fordham with 139 and George Washington with 138.

Massachusetts was able to maintain their Day One lead after turning in a strong performance in the men's 500-yd Freestyle.

Leading the way in the 500-yd Freestyle was St. Bonaventure freshman Lets Vatslav, who posted a time of 4:24.74. Massachusetts' sophomore Chris Inglis (4:27.52) and senior Joey Sbordon (4:28.71) recorded second and third-place finishes in the event.

For the second year in a row, Xavier's Michael Zennedjian captured the gold medal in the Men's 200-yd Individual Medley after turning in a time of 1:48.20. Zennedjian's time set a new Atlantic 10 Conference record in the event.

The men's 50-yard freestyle proved to be a close race with the top three finishers finishing within .16 seconds of each other. Fordham junior Devon Morris grabbed the gold for the Rams with a time of 20.35.

The final event of the night also saw Fordham capture first-place, as the relay team of freshman Pat Militti, sophomore Shintaro Noguchi, junior Devon Morris and senior Patrick Mulligan combined to post a time of 1:21.68.

Richmond currently sits atop the standings after Day Two with a score of 272 points. Fordham is in second-place with 217 points, 55 behind the Spiders. Chasing Richmond and Fordham are La Salle (185), Massachusetts (177), St. Bonaventure (105), Rhode Island (103), Duquesne (93), Xavier (86), George Washington (86) and Saint Louis (68).

In the first event of the evening, Richmond freshman Allison Titley won gold in the women's 500-yd Freestyle after posting a time of 4:53.82. Richmond's success continued in the next event as sophomore Mali Kobelja broke her own previous A-10 Championship record in the 200-yd Individual Medley en route to a first-place finish and a time of 1:59.43.

Fordham junior Brienne Ryan kept the Rams close as she recorded a victory in the women's 50-yd Freestyle with a time of 23.18. Following closely behind with a second and third-place finish were Richmond's Charlotte Bracket (23.20) and Lauren Hines (23.23).

In the women's 1-meter diving competition, Massachusetts took home gold and silver, as junior Michaela Butler posted a score of 260.85, and junior Molly Elkins posted a score of 240.85.

The Spiders' finished up their night strong after taking gold in the women's 200-yd Freestyle Relay. The relay team made up of sophomore Mali Kobelja, junior Mina Vucic, and seniors Charlotte Brackett and Jill Smaniotto recorded a combined time of 1:32.65.

The Championships continue Friday morning with trials beginning at 10:30 am and the finals taking place at 6:30 pm.
