ASU Sun Devils Swamp BYU Cougars

TEMPE, Arizona, January 11. THE Arizona State swimming and diving team started off hot and remained strong through its dual against BYU on Friday afternoon, winning the first seven events in the pool. The Sun Devils took the dual on the women's side with a score of 201-94 and 158-138 in the men's.

The women recorded top marks starting with the 200 Medley Relay (1:43.12) with the team of Taylor Wohrley, Alex Popa, Caroline Kuczynski and Shannon Landgrebe. Cassie Morrice finished first (10:08.73) in the 1,000 Free followed by Jamie Frideirchs in second. Morrice was tops in the next event as well, 200 Free, in a time of 1:49.16, with teammates Juanita Barreto and Kallie Golden rounding out the top three spots, respectively.

ASU's women continued finishing in the 1-2 spots through the 100 Backstroke (Wohrley, 56.01; Melanie Busch, 56.70), 100 Breaststroke (Tory Houston, 1:05.05; Popa, 1:05.13), and 200 Butterfly (Tristin Baxter, 2:02.45; Lori Kremer, 2:05.58). Before the break, Landgrebe got a final win for the Devils in the 50 Free (23.56) to stretch ASU's lead to 98-33.

The men's 200 Medley Relay of David Adalsteinsson, Alex Coci, Deniz Hekmati andHerbie Behm tallied ASU's first win on the day in a time of 1:31.63 Hayden Thomasfollowed with a win of his own in the 1,000 Freestyle, at 9:29.59. The Sun Devils got their third-straight win after Ryan Dignan and Ryan Glander took the first two spots, respectively, in the 200 Freestyle. Thibaut Capitaine was first (56.45) in the 100 Breaststroke while Hekmati came in close behind at 58.18. Alex Coci and Zac Dalbyfinished first and second in the 200 Butterfly to keep the men ahead 76-54 at the break.

Arizona State's divers executed top marks to capture points for the teams advantage. In the women's 1-Meter, Morgan Weller finished first with a score of 295.88 while teammate Hailey Casper came in second with a tally of 276.38. The duo repeated in the 3-meter as Weller was tops at 312.98 and Casper edged into second on a 276.15 score.Harrison Jones represented for the men, earning first in both the 1-Meter (370.73) and 3-Meter (382.50).

Starting up after the intermission, Landgrebe garnered her second win on the day, this time in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 50.71. Lizzy Luttrell finished just ahead of (2:02.26) Wohrley and Busch in the 200 Backstroke. Stretching their overall team lead, Popa edged a close finish in the 200 Breaststroke in a time of 2:19.35, ahead of Houston's 2:19.71. Baxter won the 500 Freestyle, her second win of the day, coming in at 4:54.57 as Barreto picked up second in 5:08.68

Kuczynski made it 12 then 13 wins on the board in the final three events, when she swam the 100 Butterfly in 55.19, followed by a victory in the 200 IM with a time of 2:06.19. Capping the swim events with a win in the 200 Free Relay was ASU's Landgrebe, Popa, Morrice and Busch in a time of 1:34.58.

For the men, Behm was over a full second ahead of the second place finisher in the 100 Freestyle, taking the top nod with a time of 45.86. The men's 200 Breaststroke saw Capitaine crush the field on a 2:03.89 finish with the next finisher coming in three seconds later. ASU got its eighth win thus far on the men's side after Thomas topped the 500 Freestyle in 4:37.02, his second win of the day. In the 100 Butterfly, Coci also picked a second victory, in 49.12 to boost the Sun Devil lead to 151-112 with only two events remaining. The final event of the day closed with the Sun Devil men taking home a second-place finish in the 200 Free Relay in 1:23.27 (Dignan, Adalsteinsson, Behm, Sean Kao).
