TEMPE, Arizona, April 23. ARIZONA State head diving coach Mark Bradshaw announced Heikki Makikallio has signed a letter of intent to study and compete for the Sun Devils.

Makikallio, a native of Finland, is an accomplished platform diver. Last June, Makikallio competed in the 2013 European Diving Championships finishing 15th overall on the 10-meter platform.

“I am extremely excited to have Heikki Makikallio as the newest member of our program,” said Bradshaw. “He is an outstanding student who possesses great skill in all of the diving events especially the platform.”

Makikallio follows in the footsteps of fellow Finland compatriot and Olympian Joona Puhakka. In his time at Arizona State, Puhakka won four National titles for the Sun Devils split between the 1-meter and 3-meter springboards. Puhakka went on to compete in the Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, and Beijing 2008 Olympic games for Finland with Bradshaw as his coach.
