Army Swimming Shines in Tri-Meet at SUNY Binghamton

Army swimming shined with multiple wins at the SUNY Binghamton-hosted meet.

The Binghamton swimming & diving teams completed their double-dual meets at the West Gym today. The men’s team went 1-1, defeating New Jersey Institute of Technology 216-75, and falling to Army 170.50-117.50. The women’s team went 0-2, dropping to Vermont 229-67, and Army 225-59.

“It was a great win for the guys, and the women raced tough,” remarked head coach Brad Smith. “Both teams raced pretty solid, there’s a lot to build off of. The freshmen were outstanding. They were staying right up with Army’s best swimmers. There was a lot to be proud of.”

MEN
In event two, Travis Blank, Tommy Cummings, William Harrison, and Brian McKenna finished second for the 200 yard medley relay. McKenna would follow that performance up with a first place finish in the 50 yard free. Andrew Duszynski (1:46.19) came in third in the 200 yard free, as did Tommy Cummings (1:00.39) in the 100 yard breast. Matthew Devito had two number-one finishes, first in the 100 yard fly (51.83), and then the 200 yard IM (1:58.32). Tommy Cummings (2:02.86), Eric Farm (2:03.16), and Zach Kaplan (2:03.38) were also top four finishers for the 200 Yard IM. In the final event of the day, Alex Brion, Travis Blank, Andrew Duszynski, and Brian McKenna combined to win the 400 yard free relay (3:12.69).

For diving the men had a pair of standouts. Colin Coughlan (238.00) and Cole Reagan (234.95) finished one and two for the three-meter. Reagan (243.20) and Coughlan (223.40) would then finish first and third in the one-meter.

WOMEN
Binghamton’s top finish was Maria Trivino third place (2:12.29) in the 200 yard IM. Trivino (2:28.65) also had a fourth place finish in the 200 yard breast. Other fourth place finishes for BU included Kristen Pozmanter (10:46.46) in the 1000 yard free, Taryn McLaughlin (2:13.03) in the 200 yard fly, and Selina Ng (58.64) in the 100 yard fly.

For diving Katie Ellsworth turned in a score of 174.90 to finish third overall in the one-meter.

Up next both teams will have another home event, as Siena and Niagara travel to Vestal on October 24.

The Vermont women’s swimming & diving team cruised to a 229-67 victory over Binghamton on Saturday at West Gym, but dropped a tight 167-131 decision to Army in a double dual meet to open the 2015-16 season.

“The ladies competed really well today, and our divers really helped us against Army,” said head coach Gerry Cournoyer. “We traded the lead with Army until the 500.”

UVM divers swept the top three spots in the 3-meter event, led by Maggie Preston who registered 216.20 points to win. Rookie Ashley Branagan followed in second with 182.85 and Gabrielle Logozzo took third with 178.55. Preston also took first in the 1-meter event with a score of 230.80, with Branagan following in second with 185.15.

Haley Gula claimed first place in the 200-yard breaststroke with a mark of 2:27.70, and also took second in a tight finish in the 100 breaststroke with her time of 1:07.73. Teammate Shannon Cowley was the champion of the 100-yard event, finishing with a time of 1:07.57.

Christa Weaver was the winner of the 100-yard freestyle after posting a time of 52.89. The senior also claimed second in the 50 free (24.06) and was fourth in the 200 free (1:56.43), while Lauren Punger won the 200 butterfly by less than a quarter of a second in 2:10.49.

Courtney Gray took second overall in a pair of events: the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.71 and the 100-yard butterfly in 57.77. Fellow junior Sarah Mantz was second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:55.72, while senior Andie Blaser took third in the 100 fly in 58.57.

Kelly Lennon posted a time of 5:12.64 for second in the 500 free, while Dani Rocheleau placed third in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:09.79.

Vermont registered second place in the 400-yard freestyle relay as Blaser, Mantz, Rocheleau, and Gray posted a time of 3:34.65. The Catamounts also took second in the 200-yard medley relay courtesy of Gray, Cowley, Blaser, and Weaver in 1:47.15.

UVM travels to New Hampshire next Saturday, Oct. 17 for a 12 p.m. meet in Durham. The Catamounts’ first home meet of the season will be held on Saturday, Oct. 31 against Siena at 2 p.m.

In its first contest of the 2015-16 season, the Army West Point men’s swimming and diving team earned two wins in a tri-meet in Vestal, N.Y. The Black Knights defeated Binghamton 170.50-117.50 and NJIT 188-93 Saturday.

“It was a great opening meet for the Army team,” said head coach Mickey Wender. “I am very proud of our performance. This team brings a level of professionalism and ambition that is going to take us a long way. I was very proud of our plebes in the way they stepped up in their first collegiate meet. They were great and really took ownership of what they were trying to do and contributed a tremendous amount in the pool and on the deck. It was a great team win in a competitive meet.”

Army placed first in 10-of-16 races and had numerous Cadets with multiple first place finishes.

The Cadets were first off the blocks in the 200 medley relay and the team of Josh Sembrano, Colin Kanzari, Austin Kong and Chris Szekely joined together to touch the wall in 1:34.19. Szekely’s 20.71 in the final leg of the race broke the Bearcat’s pool record. The Black Knights’ “B” squad of Evin Rude, Sam Mo, Jason Rodriguez and Brandon McCredie placed third in 1:36.18.

Mo won first in both breaststroke events, while Rude was first in the mid distance 200 and 500 free. Mo and Kanzari went one-two in the 100 breast with times of 59.72 and 1:00.20, respectively. The duo also finished in first and second places in the 200 breast after touching the wall in 2:11.04 (Mo) and 2:13.01 (Kanzari).

In the 200 free, Rude clocked a 1:42.77 to take first. Devin McCall (1:43.91) placed second, while Adam Sjoholm and Sean Martin placed fifth and sixth. Rude was also first in the 500 free with a time of 4:44.23. Tom Ottman (4:44.33), McCall (4:50.67) and Clay Harmon (4:51.62) followed to sweep the top four.

Ottman and Clay claimed the top two spots in the 1000 free with times of 9:46.74 and 9:55.13. In the 100 back, Sembrano touched the wall first in 51.09, while Alex Dempsey finished third with a time of 53.88. Jay Yang recorded a 200 fly time of 1:54.86 to take the top spot and was followed by Jason Rodriguez (1:55.45) and Zach Blankenbeker (1:56.10).

Szekely clocked a first place time of 46.08 in the 100 free. McCredie placed third and was followed by Sjholom. The Black Knights swept the top four spots of the 200 back with Sembrano leading the way with a time of 1:53.43. Matt McPheters, Yang and Michael Stanchi rounded out Army’s top finishers.

In the diving events, Edward Emery represented Army on the 3-meter and earned 171.95 points. Off the 1-meter he placed fourth with 205.45 points.

Army is back in action Friday, Oct. 16 when the team hosts UMass at Crandall Pool at 5 p.m.

The Cadets were first off the blocks in the 200 medley relay and the team of Kelly Hamilton, Jess Fabrizio, Molly Mucciarone and Rachel Kim joined together to touch the wall in 1:47.07. The Black Knights’ “B” squad of Cecelia Croman, Kara Wineinger, Teresa Groton and Jen Clay placed third in 1:50.74.

Besides the 200 medley relay, Hamilton and Mucciarone each had a hand in two other first place finishes. Hamilton placed first in the 100 back after clocking a 56.77, which was a pool record. She was also a member of the first place 200 free relay that closed the meet. Mucciarone touched the wall first in the 50 free (23.92) and 100 fly (56.98).

Sabrina Mortell won the first distance event of the day. She recorded a 1000 free time of 10:35.64 and was followed by Meaghan McGovern (10:43.05) who placed third. Monica Sowinski won the 200 free for Army with a time of 1:53.54.

Jess Burkett (2:05.88) and Bailey Smith (2:06.70) posted the top two finishes in the 200 back before Mortell won the 500 free with a time of 5:08.28. Danielle Nuszkowski (5:16.51) and Claire Willis (5:17.57) also finished high in the mid distance event for the Black Knights.

In the 200 IM, Jess Burkett and Sidney Evans finished one-two with times of 2:08.14 and 2:11.03, respectively.

In the diving events, Jorie Mason represented Army on the 1-meter and earned 146.35 points in her first event as a Black Knight.

The Black Knights closed the meet with another first place relay finish, this time in the 400 free relay. The first place “A” squad was comprised of Hamilton, Kim, Julia Bush and Sowinski and touched the wall in 3:31.88. The “B” squad of Mucciarone, Clay, Willis and Jenna Forrester placed third with a time of 3:39.24.

Army is back in action Friday, Oct. 16 when the team hosts UMass at Crandall Pool at 5 p.m.

NJIT Press Release:

The NJIT men’s swimming and diving team opened up the 2015-16 season Saturday at Binghamton in a tri-meet against the Bearcats and Army.

The Highlanders fell 218-75 to Binghamton and 188-93 to Army.

Senior Brian Capozzola led NJIT placing second in both the 50 and 100 free. The senior also finished the 200 free with a time of 1:47.06 good for sixth place.

In the 100 fly sophomore Collin Moore and freshmen Edward Parks and Alex Danielson finished third, fourth and fifth. Moore swam the in 53.13, while Parks swam in 54.59 and Danielson in 55.95.

The 400 free relay team consisting of Capozzola, Parks, sophomore Maxim Tillman, and junior Michael Sungurov recorded a time of 3:16.63 good for a second place finish.

Freshmen Steven Akdemir, Alex Danielson, Luiz De Miranda Leao III, Eddie Filipovic, Erik Kral, Brandon Lachapel, Edward Parks, and Blake Rader all made their collegiate debut for the Highlanders.

NJIT will host Bryant next on Saturday, October 17 at 11am at the Fleisher Athletic Center. All fans will receive a free NJIT Highlanders foam hand at the door.
