Army Sweeps George Washington

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army men's swim team swept the top three spots in seven events and beat George Washington, 166-86, Saturday at Crandall Pool. The women's swimming and diving team also enjoyed Senior Day with a 156-104 victory over George Washington.

The Black Knights finished 1-2-3 in the 1000-yard freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 500 freestyle and 100 butterfly.

Efri Ruthenberg and Jeff Tolbert each won two events for Army while Jake Mentele, Drew Michaelson and Anthony Chung also won events. Army also won a relay.

Newman won the 1000 freestyle in 9:50.17, just ahead of teammates Cary Cohan (9:51.54) and Nicholas Vandam (10:01.70).

Tolbert was first to the wall in the 200 freestyle, finishing in 1:42.70, ahead of teammates Zach Disbrow and Matt Scholler. Mentele won the 100 breaststroke in 57.64 in another top three finish for the Black Knights with James Michaelson and McLaughlin third.

Ruthenberg rolled to a win in the 200 butterfly, touching in 1:54.06, ahead of teammates Chung and Gordon Cooper. Ruthenberg also won the 100 freestyle in 47.05 with Disbrow second and Stephen Tangen third.

Michaelson won the 200 breaststroke in 2;08.45 with McLaugh second and Thomas Maddux third. Tolbert also claimed the 500 freestyle with David Michelson second and Patrick O'Malley third.

Chung won the 100 butterfly in 53.08 with Cooper second and Tangen third.

John Kreitler, Mentele, DIsbrow and Ruthenberg won the 200 medley relay in 1:34.56 to open the day for the Black Knights.

Army returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 15 when its opens the Patriot League Championships at Bucknell.

On the women's side, the foursome of Blair Miller, Kim DeFiori, Cora Freeman and Paige Dellavalle got things started with their win in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1 minute 50.96 seconds.

The Black Knights went on to capture eight more events en route to the comfortable decision.

Senior team captain Amanda Otto doubled winning the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. She touched first in the 200 free in 1:55.48 and the 100 fly in 59.42.

Dellavalle, Cora Freeman, Chelsey Freeman, DeFiori and Ann DiDomenico were Army's other individual event winners.

Dellavalle claimed the 200 individual medley (2:11.64), Cora Freeman won the 50 free (25.16), Chelsey Freeman took home the 200 fly (2:14.01), DeFiori touched first in the 200 backstroke (2:11.18) and DiDomenico captured 500 free (5:20.40).

Army capped off the meet with first place honors in the 400 free relay. DiDomenico, Sylvia Beck, Dellavalle, and Otto touched first in 3:39.72.

The Black Knights return to action on Thursday, Feb. 15 when they start the 2007 Patriot League Championships in Lewisburg, Pa.
