Army Quad Meet

WEST POINT, New York, October 7. THE Army men's and women's swimming and diving teams successfully opened the 2011-12 season on Friday night versus Boston College, Stony Brook and Vermont at Crandall Pool.

The Army men (2-0) defeated Boston College (162-128) and Stony Brook (190-98). The Black Knight women (2-1) beat Boston College (181-119) and Stony Brook (194-106), but fell to Vermont (173-127).

Junior Dan Foky led the way for the Army men as the third-year swimmer had a hand in three wins in the pool for the Black Knights. Foky's productive evening began in the first event of the night as he teamed up with senior captain Sam Lough, junior Ayman Andrews and sophomore Kenny Yacynych to take gold in the 200-yard medley relay with a clocking of 1 minute, 35.23 seconds.

Foky, a freestyle specialist from Charlottesville, Va., went on to win the 50 free (21.34) and place runner-up in the 100 free (47.67). Foky then joined forces with Yacynych, junior Bill McCarty and sophomore Wesley Trumbauer to capture the first-place ribbon in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:09.75).

McCarty and Trumbauer each added individual victories in the pool. McCarty won the 100 free, touching the wall in 47.59. Trumbauer, meanwhile, led an Army sweep of the top three positions in the 200-yard butterfly, winning the event with a time of 1:54.93. Freshmen Will Viana (1:55.19) and Spencer LeeMurakami (1:55.73) placed second and third, respectively, to round out the top three.

Viana led a 1-2-3 Black Knight finish in the 200-yard backstroke, touching the wall first with a clocking of 1:56.33. Yacynych took second in that event (1:57.40), with sophomore Brendan Lorton placing third (1:58.36).

Elsewhere, freshmen Joon Chung and Casey Woudenberg each recorded their first career victories with Chung winning the 100-yard breaststroke (59.10) and Woudenberg besting the field in the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.46).

Junior Chris Nguyen led the way for the Army diving contingent, winning the three-meter event with a score of 298.05. Senior Matt Joiner completed a Black Knight sweep of the diving events, taking gold off the one-meter board with a personal-best score of 282.05.

Junior Alyssa Tran set the pace for the Army women, winning a pair of events and placing runner-up in another. The two-time All-Patriot League selection won the 100-yard butterfly (58.47) and the 50-yard freestyle (23.88), while finishing second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.56).

Tran's victory in the 50 free led an Army sweep of the top three positions as sophomores Juliette Wallerstein (24.62) and Grace Hamilton (24.79) placed second and third, respectively. Wallerstein's time shattered her previous career best.

Wallerstein also had a hand in two victories in the pool for the Black Knights. Individually, she won the 100 free, touching the wall in 54.18. Then, in the final event of the night, Wallerstein teamed with Hamilton, senior captain Paige Brink and junior Megan Metts to take gold in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:37.94).

Freshman Sam Allen turned in a pair of second-place finishes, placing runner-up in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:27.24) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:12.55). Fellow freshman Kristen Barta placed second in the 500 free (5:13.85) and finished third in the 200 free (1:57.49).

Freshman Audrey Brown added a runner-up showing in the 1000 free (10:43.84), while sophomore Lara Stouffer chipped in a second-place effort in the 100 back (57.55).

Brink rounded out Army's list of top-three placers on the women's side, placing third in the 200 fly with a clocking of 2:11.93.

Army will resume its schedule on Friday, Oct. 14, when the Black Knights travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., to face Hudson Valley rival Marist. The first events are slated to begin at 4 p.m.
