Arizona, Wisconsin Split Dual Meet In Tucson

TUCSON, Arizona, October 4. THE University of Arizona women and University of Wisconsin men came out ahead Saturday afternoon as the two schools split their season-opening dual meet in Tucson. The Arizona women downed Wisconsin, 180-101, while the Wisconsin men earned a 167.5-112.5 victory over Arizona.

Arizona opened the meet with a sweep of the 200 medley relays, as Bonnie Brandon, Emma Schoettmer, Katja Hajdinjak and Taylor Schick topped the field in 1:41.63. Michael Meyer, Andrew Sovero, Andrew Porter and Brian Stevens claimed the men’s race in 1:30.09.

The Arizona women dominated the first half of the meet, winning the first five individual events. Tjasa Oder (1000 free, 10:03.71), Taylor Schick (200 free, 1:48.22), Bonnie Brandon (100 back, 55.77), Emma Schoettmer (100 breast, 1:01.91) and Elizabeth Pepper (200 fly, 1:59.13) all picked up individual wins for the Wildcats.

Brandon, Oder, Schoettmer and Pepper added second wins later on in the meet, as Brandon claimed the 200 back (1:58.86), Schoettmer touched first in the 200 breast (2:13.47) and Oder got to the wall first in the 500 free (4:54.90). Pepper posted a 55.13 in the 100 fly to sweep the butterfly events.

Wisconsin got victories from Chase Kinney in the 50 free (23.11), Ivy Martin in the 100 free (49.24) and Aja Van Hout in the 400 IM (4:23.04).

On the men’s side, Wisconsin’s Matthew Hutchins got to the wall first in the first individual event of the day, taking the 1000 free in 9:17.11. Hutchins doubled up later in the meet, posting a 4:25.49 to win the 500 free. Brett Pinfold (200 free, 1:38.65) and Drew Teduits (100 back, 49.85) kept the ball rolling for the Badgers in the next two events. Pinfold added a second win later in the meet in the 100 free (44.86), while Teduits swept the backstroke events with a 1:48.06 in the 200.

Nicholas Caldwell (200 fly, 1:47.72), Nick Schafer (200 breast, 1:59.60) and Josh Anderson (400 IM, 4:00.44) also picked up individual wins for the Badgers, while Arizona got victories from Andrew Sovero in the 100 breast (54.79), Brian Stevens in the 50 free (20.62) and Andrew Porter in the 100 fly (48.89).

Arizona’s foursome of Brandon, Schick, Paige Kremer and Cameron McHugh claimed the final 400 free relay in 3:22.24, while Wisconsin’s quartet of Ryan Stack, Harrison Tran, Alex Shozda and Sean Maloney touched in 3:00.00 to win the men’s 400 free relay.
