Arizona Wildcats Sweep Events in Quad Meet

TUCSON, Arizona, January 4. THE Arizona women's swimming and diving team returned to competition with a dominating performance to start the new year. The Wildcats earned a first place finish in every event in sweeping past Oregon State, Northern Arizona and New Mexico State on Friday at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.

The Wildcats, who are ranked No. 6 in the current College Swimming Coaches Association of America Poll (CSCAA), improve their record to 8-2 in dual meets this season.

The big winner of the afternoon was freshman Bonnie Brandon. Brandon earned a meet-best four first-place finishes. She won the 100 back, 200 back, 500 free and was part of the winning 400 free relay team.

Margo Geer also turned in a strong performance by taking three top finishes. She took first place in the 200 free, 100 free and was part of the winning 200 medley relay team.

Meanwhile, Shannyn Hultin (1000 free/200 IM), Chelsey Salli (100 breast/200 breast), Lauren Smart (200 medley relay/100 fly) and Kate Flederbach (50 free/400 free relay) each earned a pair of first place finishes on the afternoon. In addition, Ashley Evans picked up a victory in the 200 fly.

Diver Ashley Herrera turned in a pair of strong performances by taking top honors in both the 1m and 3m diving competition. Herrera scored 280.75 in the 1m and 289.90 in the 3m.

The men's and women's diving team will head to Los Angeles beginning Jan. 11 for the three-day Bruin Diving Invitational. Both swim teams return to competition on Jan. 25-26 for duals against California and Stanford.
