Arizona, USC Swimming and Diving Teams Split Pac-12 Showdown

LOS ANGELES – The USC swimming and diving teams earned a split against Pac-12 rival Arizona on Saturday afternoon, with the Trojan men maintaining their perfect record with a 182-118 win, and the Arizona women taking home a 172-127 win.

Trojan senior Cary Wright won three races to lead the men’s team to a win over Arizona while junior Jasmine Tosky won twice in a USC loss to the Wildcats’ women’s team on Saturday (Nov. 15) at Uytengsu Aquatics Center.

The Trojan men won 182-118 to improve to 4-0 overall, 4-0 in the Pac-12. The USC women fell 172-127 and are now 3-1, 3-1.

The Arizona women opened action with a win in the 200y medley relay in 1:40.90 to USC’s 1:41.56 by freshman Hannah Weiss, senior Andrea Kropp, junior Kendyl Stewart and sophomore Evan Swenson. The Trojan men’s quartet of senior Luca Spinazzola, junior Ridge Altman and sophomores Dylan Carter and Santo Condorelli won in 1:29.72, a season-best in the event.

Wildcat Tjasa Oder won the women’s 1000y free (9:58.59) while Trojan freshman Pawel Furtek won the men’s distance in 9:16.93 after winning the same event Friday against ASU. He held off Arizona’s Nick Hogsed (9:18.25) for the win.

Arizona’s Bonnie Brandon won the 200y free in 1:47.32 to lead a 1-2 Wildcat finish. USC’s Chelsea Chenault was third in 1:50.73. It was the first of three wins for Brandon.

Carter registered an NCAA `B’ cut en route to a win in the men’s 200y free in 1:36.65 while sophomore teammate Reed Malone was second (1:39.88).

Weiss (54.41) led a 1-2-3 USC finish in the 100y back with Stewart second (55.41) and sophomore Diana Chang third (56.10). The men repeated the effort as Spinazzola (48.21) posted an NCAA `B’ cut and USC season best while freshmen Ralf Tribuntsov (48.23) and Jonanthan Knox (50.37) went 2-3 in the 100y back.

The Wildcats’ Sara Borendame (1:01.88) led a 1-2 finish in the women’s 100y breast. In the men’s event, Arizona NCAA breaststroke champion Kevin Cordes won in 54.19 to lead a 1-2 finish.

Tosky turned in a 1:58.46 to win the women’s 200y fly ahead of Wildcat Elizabeth Pepper’s 2:00.30 while USC junior Lucy Worrall was third (2:05.50). Senior Cary Wright then won the men’s 200y fly in 1:49.11, edging sophomore teammate Michael Domagala.

Arizona swept the 50y free with wins by Taylor Schick (23.16) in the women’s race and by Bradley Tandy (19.98) in the men’s. USC’s Carter was second in 20.44.

Senior Haley Ishimatsu (315.60) and junior Sam Adams (302.18) went 1-2 in the women’s 1-meter before the meet started while Arizona’s Rafael Quintero won the men’s 3-meter (332.55). USC junior Collin Pollard was second (315.60).

Following the first break, Arizona sprints went 1-2 again, this time in the 100y free led by Schick’s 50.13. Condorelli won the men’s 100y free in 43.67 to improve upon his NCAA `B’ cut and USC season-best time.

The Wildcats’ Brandon won the 200y back in 1:56.71 with USC’s Weiss second in 2:00.78. Wright won his second event of the day by taking the men’s 200y back out of lane 2 in 1:48.11. He edged teammate Tribuntsov (1:48.18) while Arizona’s Michael Meyer kept it close in third (1:48.52).

The Arizona women’s strong day continued with a 1-2 in the 200y breast led by Emma Schoettmer’s 2:12.54. Cordes, the top breaststroker in the country, won the men’s event in 2:00.49 to lead a 1-2 finish.

Brandon won for a third time with a 4:48.76 in the women’s 500y free. Furtek followed his 1000y free win with one in the men’s 500y free in a season’s best 4:29.30, edging Malone’s 4:30.32.

Stewart won the women’s 100y fly in 53.90, just 0.07 off her season best. Domagala led a 1-2-3 sweep in the men’s 100y fly with a 48.88 while Condorelli was second (48.98), senior Dakota Hodgson third (50.42).

Arizona’s Samantha Pickens won the women’s 3-meter with 313.88 with Ishimatsu second (271.73) and freshman Alexa Cacao third (262.20). Quintero won the men’s 1-meter with 360.23, challenged by USC senior Jordan Gear in second (354.08).

Tosky won the final women’s individual event with a 4:18.10 while Wright completed his trifecta with a victory in the men’s 400y IM (3:59.36) with a Trojan season-best effort.

The Arizona women won the 400y free relay in 3:21.81, edging USC’s 3:26.21. The Trojans’ 400y free relay of Carter, Condorelli, Tribuntsov and Domagala won in 2:57.57.
