Arizona State Hosts Cowboys, Beavers, UBC

TEMPE, AZ, January 5. THIS week, the Arizona State University swimming and diving teams return home to host Wyoming, Oregon State and the University of British Columbia, the Sun Devils recently reported.

The Sun Devils start the weekend Friday, January 7 against Wyoming. ASU continues action Saturday, January 8 where the men play host to UBC and the women take on Oregon State. Competition against these clubs in Arizona for their winter training trips begins both days at 11 a.m. at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.

ASU vs. Wyoming
This week's matchup between ASU and Wyoming will mark the second all-time meeting between the two schools. The two teams saw action in Tempe January, 4 2003 where the Sun Devil men defeated the Cowboys, 212-75 while the women overcame the Cowgirls, 232-68.

ASU vs. British Columbia (Men)
The Sun Devils last saw action against British Columbia in Tempe January, 4 2002 in a meet that saw ASU come out on top, 127-72.

ASU vs. Oregon State (Women)
This marks the first time ASU and Oregon State will square off in dual meet action.

SEASON RECAP
In looking at the season to date, ASU’s women stand fourth in the most recent CSCAA dual meet poll and 12 ASU athletes have recorded times in the NCAA top 20.

Senior All-American Florencia Szigeti leads the way with three of her times being among the nation's best, including a tenth best of 49.45 in the 100 freestyle. She also claims top-fifteen times in both the 50 and 200 freestyle (15th, 50 free, 22.96, 15th, 200 free, 1:47.63).

Freshman Caitlin Andrew climbed into the top-ten in the 100 butterfly, claiming the nation's seventh fastest time at 54.07.

Others in the national top twenty are senior Jeff Barrett (11th, 200 free, 1:36.62, 18th, 100 free, 44.33), freshman Lucas Azevedo (12th, 1650 free, 15:20.26), freshman Sarah A Fischer (14th, 1650 free, 16:31.52), junior All-American David Kolozar (15th, 200 fly, 1:48.68), junior Leo Martins (16th, 200 breast, 2:00.06), junior Heidi Schmidt (17th, 100 breast, 1:02.82), sophomore Christine Creek (17th, 200 breast, 2:15.67), junior Laura Ullrich (17th, 100 fly, 54.87), senior Emerson Ward (17th, 100 breast, 55.00) and junior Joey Clements (18th, 200 breast, 2:00.66).

ASU, Last Time in the Pool
The he Arizona State University swimming and diving teams were last in the pool December 2-4, 2004 at the Texas Invitational where the women finished fourth and the men seventh. The women claimed 28 NCAA consideration times while the men notched nine throughout the three-day competition. The highlight of the competition for the men was senior diver Thomas McCrummen who took first-place honors in the 3-meter springboard (337.15) and second-place in the 1-meter event (319.30).

Other notable finishes for the Sun Devil men are a fifth-place finish in the 200 butterfly for David Kolozar, an eighth-place finish in the 100 freestyle for Jeff Barrett and Leo Martins claiming eighth-place in the 200 breaststroke. The women saw a fourth-place finish in the 200 freestyle for Florencia Szigeti, Trisha Tumlinson grabbed second-place in the 1-meter and platform events and Sarah A Fischer and Kathryn Hennessy finished second and third, respectively, in the 1650 freestyle. Christine Creek and Heidi Schmidt grabbed back-to-back finishes in the 200 breaststroke finishing fifth and sixth overall while Ellis Schieman swam a personal-best in the 200 butterfly to claim fifth place honors.

Breaking Records
Junior All-American Joona Puhakka set his fourth school-record in the 3-meter springboard event with a score of 398.32 against USC on November 20. Puhakka has set or broke a school-record in each of his three seasons as a Sun Devil.
