Arizona Men, Tennessee Women Flex Muscles in Dual Action

By Emily Sampl

BOULDER, Colorado, January 29. THIS weekend, schools across the country sent their seniors off in style with dual meet wins in their final home meets. For some, it marked the last chance to race before most major conference meets begin in a few weeks. Here are a few highlights.

Pac-12 rivals Cal and USC, who happen to be ranked second and third in the country, respectively, squared off in Los Angeles on Friday night. Despite losing the first two events, the Bears rebounded and handed host USC a 163-138 defeat, their first dual meet loss of the year. Cal's Liv Jensen led the comeback with three individual wins in the 50 free (22.52), 100 free (49.01) and 200 free (1:46.40). Teammate Caitlin Leverenz had a strong showing as well, winning the 200 fly (1:56.56) and 200 breast (2:11.06) and taking second in the 400 IM (4:06.08). USC's Katinka Hosszu won that event in a solid 4:05.83 to go along with her victory in the 200 back (1:57.06). Haley Anderson swept the distance events, taking the 1000 free in 9:43.48 and the 500 in 4:45.11.

In another battle of highly ranked teams, Texas and Arizona dueled in Tucson on Saturday. The Wildcat men asserted their No.-1 ranking with a convincing 137-68 win over No.-2 Texas, while the Longhorn women emerged victorious, 116-89. Woody Joye, who recently transferred from Texas to Arizona, won two events for his new team – the 200 fly (1:46.51) and 200 free (1:37.18). Cory Chitwood added first-place finishes in the 200 IM (1:46.54) and 200 back (1:42.78). Karlee Bispo (100 free, 49.95 and 200 free, 1:47.13) and Kelsey Leneave (1000 free, 10:03.31, and 500 free, 4:50.58) had two wins apiece for the Longhorn women.

On Saturday, the Tennessee women staged an upset over SEC foe Florida, marking the first time in history the Lady Volunteers have topped Florida in a dual meet. Lindsay Gendron recorded three victories in the 200 free (1:46.45), 500 free (4:45.37) and 1000 free (9:39.33), while Jenny Connolly topped the field in the 100 back (52.83) and 100 fly (52.33). Sarah Bateman had an outstanding day in her last meet for the Gators, posting great in-season times in the 50 (22.13) and 100 free (49.10). Marcin Cieslak, the SEC Swimmer of the Week last week, led the Gator men with three victories in the 100 fly (47.77), 200 fly (1:48.49) and 200 free (1:37.65).
