Arizona Men and Women Defeat UCSB and UCLA

TUCSON, Arizona, November 21. THE No. 6 women’s and the No. 5 men’s Arizona swimming and diving teams defeated two Southern California schools Saturday, maintaining undefeated records for both sides. The women downed No. 7 UCLA, 125-80, improving their record to 4-0 (2-0 Pac-10), while the men (3-0/1-0 Pac-10) defeated the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos 116-79.

The Arizona women took the top-two positions in the 400-medley relay, scoring 15 points for the Wildcats. The Arizona ‘B’ relay team composed of senior Marshi Smith, freshman Jacquelyn Craft, junior Whitney Myers and sophomore Lacey Nymeyer won with a time of 3:41.68. The ‘A’ relay team, composed of seniors Jenna Gresdal, Erin Sieper, Lisa Pursley and freshman Taylor Baughman finished second (3:42.02).

The Wildcat women won a total of nine individual events beginning with Nymeyer, who won a tight race in the 200 freestyle (1:47.98) as she finished just ahead of UCLA’s Kim Vandenberg (1:48.14). Next, Gresdal won the 50 freestyle (22.94) while freshman Lindsey Kelly finished third (23.68).

Myers finished first in the 400 IM with a time of 4:18.73 and also placed second in the 200 butterfly (2:01.97). Baughman tallied another individual win for Arizona in the 100 freestyle, finishing with a time of 51.38 while classmates Kelly and Anna Turner finished second and third.

Both Gresdal and Nymeyer posted additional individual wins, as Gresdal finished first in the 200 backstroke (1:58.49) and Nymeyer won the 500 freestyle (4:51.10). Sieper won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:14.84 and Craft finished third (2:16.38).

The 200 free relay team composed of Kelly, Baughman, senior Ryann Hackett and Pursley finished the competition by winning the race with a time of 1:34.56. In the diving well, senior Tiffany Manning won both springboard events posting a score of 295.85 in the 1-meter and 295.10 in the 3-meter.

On the men’s side, the Wildcats won all but one event beginning with the 400 medley relay composed of sophomore Albert Subirats, freshman Josh Arreguin, junior Adam Ritter and sophomore Jonas Persson, who won with a time of 3:21.04.

Sophomore Matt Biel and senior Tyler DeBerry took the top-two spots in the 1,000 freestyle as Biel placed first (9:14.96) and DeBerry finished second (9:30.78). Arizona Senior Lyndon Ferns finished first in the 200 freestyle (1:38.35) and Subirats took second place (1:41.54). Two Wildcats again took the top-two spots in a race as senior Simon Burnett won the 50 freestyle with a time of 19.98 and sophomore Ivan Barnes finished second (21.07).

In the 400 IM, three Arizona swimmers dominated the top-three places with Ritter finishing first (4:01.45), senior Dave Rollins second (4:03.32) and junior Nate Rothman third. Sophomore Darren Maxwell finished second in the 200 butterfly (1:51.09) while Burnett posted another individual victory in the 100 freestyle (44.43). In the 200 backstroke, Ritter and Rollins finished first and second to tally 13 points for the men’s team while Biel won the 500 freestyle (4:32.14).
