Arizona Invitational: Alyssa Anderson Wins 200 Fly, 400 Free; Amanda Beard and Christine Magnuson Also Victorious

MESA, Arizona, May 26. ALYSSA Anderson picked up two wins, while Amanda Beard and Christine Magnuson also shined as the first full finals session of the Arizona Invitational got underway this evening.

Arizona's Alyssa Anderson put her stamp on the first individual event of the night, the women's 200 fly. Anderson touched first in 2:13.26, in front of Sandpipers' Olivia Barker (2:16.28) and Tucson Ford's Erin Campbell (2:19.24). Fellow Arizona Wildcat Cory Chitwood earned the men's 200 fly title in 2:04.64, ahead of teammate Matt Barber's 2:08.69 and Gold Medal Swim Club's Alex Schultz (2:10.32).

Tucson Ford's Amanda Beard, a four-time Olympian and silver medalist in the event, joined the winner's circle in the 100 breast with a 1:09.52. Curl Burke's Ellyn Baumgardner touched half a second behind in 1:10.06. Annie Chandler of Tucson Ford earned third place honors in 1:11.55. Arizona's Kevin Cordes, the newly-minted American record-holder in short course yards, proved he's just as good in long course with a winning effort of 1:02.25 in the men's 100 breast. Teammate Carl Mickelson got to the wall second in 1:03.90, followed by Tucson Ford's Marcus Titus (1:04.23).

In the women's 50 free, Tucson Ford's Christine Magnuson emerged from the four-swimmer super final in 25.16. Arizona's Kait Flederbach was right behind in 25.38, followed by her teammate Margo Geer in 25.91. Meanwhile, Phoenix Swim Club's Roland Schoeman got his hand on the wall first in the men's 50 free shootout, 22.38 to 22.59 over Tucson Ford's Matt Grevers. SwimMAC's Nick Brunelli took third in 22.89.

Alyssa Anderson picked up her second win of the evening in convincing fashion, taking the 400 free in 4:16.41. Gold Medal's Lizzy Luttrell (4:25.11) and Shannon Landgrebe (4:25.15) fought it out to the end for the second and third spots. Tucson Ford's Darian Townsend wrapped up the evening with a winning effort of 4:00.14 in the men's 400. Teammate Jean Basson touched second in 4:03.39 and Arizona's Matt Barber swam to third in 4:04.42.

In relay action, Phoenix Swim Club's Rowan Hauber, Hannah Holman, Penny Nichols and Kathleen Mulligan won the women's 200 medley relay in 2:04.05. Their teammates, Timmy Frakes, Michael Nelson, Kyle Shores and JJ Osborn won the men's race in 1:49.52.

Last night, medals were handed out in the distance freestyle events. Gold Medal's Alexandra Aitchison (9:01.12) and Ben Olszewski (9:07.66) won the respective women's and men's 800 free. Mesa's Allie Smith (20:45.58) and Sandpipers' Logan Houck (16:03.54) won the women's and men's 1500 free races.
