A tie between the future of women’s butterfly occurred in the women’s 200-meter fly finale.

NCAP 15-year-old Cassidy Bayer and 17-year-old Katie McLaughlin put up matching 2:09.12s as McLaughlin closed the distance down the stretch to catch Bayer.

That’s a gigantic in-season best for Bayer, blasting the 2:12.03 she clocked in prelims, and just missed her lifetime best of 2:09.08 from Junior Pan Pacs.  McLaughlin, however, has a 2:07.08 to her credit from last summer and has more in the tank.

The present of U.S. butterfly, reigning Pan Pacs champion Cammile Adams, took third overall in 2:09.25 in what proved to be a close finish.

Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu finished off the podium with a fourth-place time of 2:09.90.

NCAP’s Andrew Seliskar surged to a lifetime-best tying effort in the men’s 200-meter fly as he dominated the finale this evening.

Seliskar hit the wall in 1:55.92 to match his best effort from the Junior Pan Pacific Championships last summer.  That time ranked him 11th in the world, and Seliskar is just getting started here in 2015.

Andrew Torres held off Mission Viejo’s Grant Shoults, 1:58.99 to 1:59.56, for second and third-place honors.

NBAC’s Tom Luchsinger (1:59.69) and SwimMAC’s Tyler Clary (2:00.84) wound up fourth and fifth.

Aggie’s Breeja Larson nearly matched her in-season best in the women’s 100-meter breast as she closed hard to pick up the win.

Larson came home in 35.49 to win the finale in 1:07.33 to just miss her 1:07.32 from the Mesa stop of the 2013 Arena Grand Prix.

Alabama’s Kaylin Burchell posted a personal best time of 1:08.21 for second overall, while Calgary’s Fiona Doyle turned in a third-place time of 1:08.99.

Michael Andrew, the 15-year-old professional swimmer, unleashed his first 15-16 U.S. National Age Group record with a win in the men’s 100-meter breast at the Arena Pro Swim Series in Austin.

Andrew came home like a freight train with a 32.38 to get in front of Trojan’s Glenn Snyders, 1:01.67 to 1:01.70, for the win.  The time pushed him in front of Carsten Vissering’s 15-16 U.S. NAG time of 1:01.94 set in 2013.

That’s Andrew’s first 15-16 long course NAG after obliterating the age group record books as a 10 year old up through 14.

Snyders (1:01.70) and NYAC’s Mike Alexandrov (1:01.77) rounded out the podium with Tennessee’s Brad Craig taking fourth in 1:01.89.

Oakville’s Dominique Bouchard added the 100-meter event to her 200-meter backstroke victory from last night as she overtook a legend in Natalie Coughlin.

Coughlin, who went out fast with a 29.41, wound up fading a bit back as Bouchard picked up the 1:00.68 to 1:00.70 triumph this evening.

Meanwhile, Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu managed to track down bronze with a third-place time of 1:01.00.  14-year-old Scottsdale prodigy Taylor Ruck took fourth in 1:01.25.

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Kirsty Coventry had made the final this morning, but elected to scratch to focus on the 200 IM.

The Gentle Giant Matt Grevers put together a sizzling in-season time for the men’s 100-meter backstroke title tonight.

Grevers hit the wall in 53.27 for the win, just a bit off his in-season best of 53.05 from the 2010 edition of the Austin Grand Prix.  His time tonight is just half-a-second back of his third-ranked season best of 52.75 from Nationals last summer.

California’s Ryan Murphy, who took down the 200 back already this week, took second in 53.82 with Club Wolverine’s Junya Koga earning third overall in 53.87 as it took a 53 just to make the podium.

Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu had just enough in the tank in freestyle to overtake California’s Caitlin Leverenz in the women’s 200-meter IM tonight.

Hosszu finally picked up her first gold medal in her seventh final here in Austin as she clocked a 2:11.43 for the win.

Leverenz, who had a strong front half along with her always amazing breaststroke split, took second overall in 2:11.84 in what proved to be an exciting finale.

Gator’s Hilda Luthersdottir raced her way to third overall with a 2:15.12 as SwimMAC’s Kirsty Coventry finished fourth in 2:15.89 after scratching the 100 back to focus on this race.

Women’s 800 free

NCAP’s Katie Ledecky turned in an epic time of 8:11.21, the second fastest time of ever.

Ledecky, who was out under world-record pace through 600 meters finally fell off the pace at the 700-meter mark.  She almost, however, turned the heat back up as she hit the wall in 8:11.21.

After the race, just off her world record of 8:11.00 from last summer in Shenandoah, Texas, Ledecky was barely breathing hard and seemed a bit disappointed that she didn’t break the record.  She said she wasn’t hurting.

Ledecky’s world-record splits were:

28.91, 59.44 (30.53), 1:30.49 (31.05), 2:01.48 (30.99), 2:32.32 (30.84), 3:03.42 (31.10), 3:34.34 (30.92), 4:05.70 (31.36), 4:36.56 (30.86), 5:07.79 (31.23), 5:38.67 (30.88), 6:09.64 (30.97), 6:31.81 (22.17?), 7:10.87 (39.06?), 7:41.53 (30.66), 8:11.00 (29.47)

Club Wolverine’s Connor Jaeger threw down a 15:16.71 to win the men’s 1500 free going away.

Jaeger is definitely still feeling his way through the beginning of the season, but certainly should start popping some dynamic times by the end of the Arena Pro Swim Seris.  In fact, he set his in-season best last year in Santa Clara with a 15:00.97.

Andrew Gemmell, the reigning Swimming World Open Water Swimmer of the Year, took second tonight in 15:27.75 with Mission Viejo’s Nick Norman earning third in 15:38.68 from the earlier heats.

Women’s 400 medley relay

Texas A&M’s Claire Brandt, Franko Jonker, Beryl Gastaldello and Sarah Gibson had more than enough to beat the A&M B team with a 4:09.13 for the win tonight.
