Anton Ipsen Sets School, Pool Record as NC State Takes Lead Against Minnesota

RALEIGH – North Carolina State freshman Anton Ipsen set a school and pool record in the men’s 1000 free (8:58.92) to lead the Wolfpack swimming and diving teams to leads against the University of Minnesota on Friday night at Casey Aquatic Center. The Wolfpack women lead 106-80, while the men are up 125-60 heading into tomorrow’s events.

Back in its home water for the first time in more than three months, the NC State swimming and diving team hosted Minnesota Friday evening on day one of it two-day dual meet.

Through 20 events, the Wolfpack women lead the Gophers 106-80, while the NC State men lead Minnesota 125-60.

Wolfpack Relays
The women captured first and second place in the 200 freestyle relay. The group of Lauren Poli, Ashlyn Koletic, Natalie Labonge and Riki Bonnema swam a time of 1:30.23 while the squad of Lotta Nevalinen, Krista Duffield, Lauren Rhodes and Yuri Nakano notched a time of 1:31.81.

The team of Simonas Bilis, Ryan Held, Andreas Scheillerup and David Williams took first place in the men’s 200 free relay touching the wall at 1:18.58, which was good enough for a NCAA top-10 time.

The quartet of Jason Deana, Scott Johnson, Hennessey Stuart and John Newell captured the second-place spot, out touching Minnesota’s `A’ squad by .06.
The Pack capped off the relays on day one with two more wins. In the 400 medley relay Alexia Zevnik, Kayla Brumbaum, Koletic and Labonge swam a 3:40.18 in the women’s event, while Hennessey Stuart, Derek Hren, Soren Dahl and Bilis swam a new Casey Aquatic Center record with a time of 3:11.14.

Freestyle Watch
Freshman Anton Ipsen once again defeated his own school record, swimming an 8:58.92 in the 1000 free for a first place finish. His new time also gives him the second fastest time in the country as well as a Casey Aquatic Center pool record.

Dahl claimed the title in the men’s 200 free with a time of 1:36.99 while Labonge captured second-place honors in the women’s 200 free with a time of 1:49.37.

Bonnema won the women’s 50 free with a time of 22.74, while Bilis and Held earned first and second on the men’s side with times of 19.88 and 20.28.

Back It Up
NC State took a one, two, three finish in the women’s 100 back, as Zevnik notched a 53.47 and Koletic and Hannah Freyman touched the wall with a 55.29 and a 56.30.

The Wolfpack men claimed the top two spots in the 100 back, as Stuart and Scheillerup recorded times of 47.50 and 48.12.

Breaststroke
On the men’s side Hren took first place in the 100 breast with a time of 54.52, while Brumbaum and Addison Bursch took second and third on the women’s side with times of 1:02.42 and 1:04.86.

Fly Into the Sky
On both sides, NC State claimed first and second place in the 200 butterfly. Yuri Nakano and Lydia Jones on the women’s side touched the wall with times of 2:00.02 and 2:00.56, while Christian McCurdy and John Newell posted times of 1:45.22 and 1:49.61 on the men’s side.

Individual Medley
Zevnik took the top honor in the women’s 200 IM with a time of 2:02.09, while Stephen Coetzer won the men’s event with a time of 1:48.29.

Springboard Action
Rachel Mumma finished third in the women’s three-meter competition with a score of 333.75 to give her a new season-best.

Wolfpack Improvement
NC State recorded 10 new top times for the 2014-15 season. The ‘Wolfpack Top Times’ consists of the top five times in a given season for each individual event, and the top three times in relay events.

Postseason Focus
In addition the NC State’s first day performance, the Pack recorded two more NCAA `B’ standard times.

Day one of competition at the Casey Aquatic Center has wrapped up, with both the Gopher men and women trailing the N.C. State Wolfpack. Current men’s scoring has N.C. State with 125, and the Gophers with 60. Women’s scores has the Wolfpack with 106, and Minnesota with 80. Competition will continue tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. CT and will allow the Gophers to make adjustments and come back full-throttle against a top-tier program.

Both the Gopher men’s and women’s swim teams started off the meet placing third in their respective 200 free relays. Becca Weiland, Lauren Votava, Blake Zeiger and Danielle Nack put up a time of 1:32.22 in the relay, while the Gopher men (Daryl Turner, Paul Fair, Ian Gordon and Ryan Miksch) posted a time of 1:21.70.

Senior Kiera Janzen finished the women’s 1000 free with a time of 9:52.86 for first place. Rookies Brooke Zeiger followed with a time of 10:01.65 for second, and Brooke Lorentzen finished fourth with a time of 10:07.93.

In the men’s 1000 free, CJ Smith placed second with a 9:08.50. Junior Logan Redondo finished with a time of 9:24.28 for fifth place, followed by Brandon Hatanaka for seventh place with a 9:36.38.

Jessica Plant took home first in the women’s 200 freestyle with a time of 1:48.27. Teammates Tori Simenec (1:49.45) and Maddie Hoch (1:50.13) followed for third and fourth place.

Freshman Michael Nunan put up the top time for the Gophers in the men’s 200 freestyle to take second. Nunan finished with a time of 1:39.59. Ben Bravence picked up fourth in the event with a time of 1:41.40.

Katelyn Holmquist finished fourth in the women’s 100 back with a time of 57.04. Freshmen Brooke Zeiger (57.62) and Isabel Wyer (59.35) followed, taking fifth and seventh respectively.

Sophomore Daryl Turner placed third in the men’s 100 back, finishing with a time of 48.22. Seniors Chris Johnson (50.12) and Carl Newenhouse (51.42) finished in fifth and seventh place.

Kierra Smith took first in the 100 breast, finishing with a time of 1:02.12. Senior Blake Zeiger finished with a 1:05.02 for fourth place. Freshman Rae Bullinger finished seventh with a time of 1:06.35.

Freshman Conner McHugh placed second with a time of 55.92 in the 100 breast. Eric Sande followed taking third with a time of 57.09. Spencer Mattox finished fifth with a 57.53.

Danielle Nack posted a time of 2:02.02 in the women’s 200 fly to take third. Seniors Devin Ste. Marie (2:05.23) and Christie Clarke (2:06.52) finished fifth and sixth in the event.

Nick Orf posted a 1:49.85 in the men’s 200 fly for third place. Brandon Hatanaka followed for fourth place with a 1:51.39. Viktor Bjoerk (1:52.55) finished sixth.

Senior Becca Weiland finished second in the women’s 50 freestyle with a time of 22.92. Heidi Busack (24.09) and Abigail Raatz (24.21) placed sixth and seventh.

In the men’s 50 freestyle, Paul Fair finished third with a time of 20.62. Ian Gordon (21.21) and Noah Busch (21.44) finished fifth and sixth.

Freshman Brooke Zeiger placed second in the women’s 200 IM with a time of 2:02.13. Gophers Tori Simenec (2:02.35) and Jessica Plant (2:04.49) followed for fourth and fifth place.

Sophomore Jakub Maly put up a 1:50.98 in the men’s 200 IM to take second. Senior Andrew Hartbarger placed fourth with a time of 1:51.82 and Jon Thielen (1:57.83) sixth.

The relay team of Tori Simenec, Kierra Smith, Becca Weiland and Lauren Votava finished second with a time of 3:40.18 in the women’s 400 medley relay. The Gopher women also picked up a fourth place finish in the event.

Daryl Turner, Conner McHugh, Paul Fair and Ryan Miksch posted a time of 3:18.49 in the men’s 400 medley relay to take second. The Gophers also took fourth with a time of 3:22.44.

Yu Zhou led the women on the one-meter boards, finishing with a total of 341.47 points for first place. Lexi Tenenbaum followed for second with 338.62 points. Jessica Ramberg placed fourth with 330.75 points.

Matt Barnard took home the gold on the men’s one-meter. Barnard finished with a total of 332.70 and was followed by teammates Erik Larsen (320.10) and Dylan Zoe (319.35) for second and third.
