The FINA World Cup at Doha closed on Saturday with Katinka Hosszu and Sarah Sjostrom winning two events while American Blake Pieroni and Andriy Govorov put up some solid times for mid-September. Govorov broke the World Cup record in the 50 fly with his time.

Men’s 400 IM

Hungary’s David Verraszto won the 400 IM final to start the Saturday session at the 2018 FINA World Cup in Doha. Verraszto swam a 4:13.44 to finish just ahead of Maksym Shemberev of Azerbaijan (4:13.61). Tom Peribonio, who swam for South Carolina, finished third at 4:17.02 for Ecuador.

Verraszto was a 4:10 earlier in the summer at European Championships.

Men’s 50 Fly

World Record holder Andriy Govorov of the Ukraine was the only one to break 23 in the final with a 22.82. Second was American Michael Andrew (23.21), slightly off his 22.9 from US Nationals in July. The bronze went to South Africa’s Ryan Coetzee (23.54), holding off some good names like Russia’s Vlad Morozov (23.65) and South Africa’s Chad Le Clos (23.80).

Le Clos has been open about an illness he has gotten while in Doha on his Instagram stories, causing him to withdraw from the first half of the meet.

Women’s 200 Back

World Cup queen Katinka Hosszu won the 200 back final on the final day of the FINA World Cup at Doha with a 2:11.00. Hosszu was well in front of Kira Toussaint of the Netherlands at the end of the race. Toussaint was a 2:13.24 while China’s Jiang Yuru was third at 2:14.54.

Men’s 100 Back

Australia’s Mitch Larkin had a good race with Michael Andrew with Larkin getting the upper hand at 53.68 to Andrew’s 54.11. Russia’s Vladimir Morozov picked up his first medal of the night with a bronze at 55.07. Andrew picked up his second medal of the night.

Women’s 100 Fly

Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom cruised to a 56.46 in the 100 fly final to win the event by almost two full seconds over Belgium’s Kimberly Buys (58.23). Ranomi Kromowidjojo (59.40) finished in third place in the event.

Sjostrom was a 56.23 at the European Championships earlier this summer and showed here in Doha that she is not declining. She had the second fastest time in the world this year behind Japan’s Rikako Ikee (56.08).

Women’s 100 Free

Sjostrom won her second event of the night in Doha with a 100 free gold medal at 53.13. She held off good challenges from long-time Dutch rivals Ranomi Kromowidjojo (53.29) and Femke Heemskerk (53.34). Those three women have been competing against each other for the better of 10 years and seem to be still in the prime of their careers.

The Netherlands had two other swimmers in the final with Kim Busch (54.81) and Kira Toussaint (55.44).

Men’s 200 Free

American Blake Pieroni has been having a solid meet at the FINA World Cup in Doha with another gold medal in the 200 free. Pieroni swam a 1:47.20 for the gold as he finished two full seconds ahead of Kyle Stolk of the Netherlands (1:49.45) and Lorenz Weiremans (1:49.68) of Belgium.

Pieroni was not far off his 1:45.93 from US Nationals in July. He was the third fastest American this year behind Townley Haas (1:45.56) and Andrew Seliskar (1:45.70).

Men’s 200 Breast

Russia’s Anton Chupkov continued his hot streak in the 200 breast with a comfortable 2:08.77 for the gold in Doha. Chupkov was the only man under 2:07 in 2018 with his 2:06.80 from European Championships earlier this summer.

Chupkov finished well in front of Arno Kamminga of the Netherlands (2:11.21) and fellow Russian Kirill Prigoda (2:11.61).

Women’s 50 Breast

Russia’s Yulia Efimova won the 50 breast final with a 30.43 to finish well ahead of fellow Russian Vitalina Simonova (32.01) and Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu (32.81). It was a surprisingly small field with only five swimmers on the start list.

Women’s 800 Free

In her third race of the night, Hosszu won 800 free final with a 8:34.58. She was in a good race with China’s Zhou Chanzhen (8:35.67) but got the better of her at the finish. Spain’s Andrea Galisteo (8:43.99) finished with the bronze.

Women’s 200 IM

Appearing in yet another final, Katinka Hosszu picked up another win with a 2:11.57 in the 200 IM to close the Doha World Cup. She swam away from Russia’s Yulia Efimova (2:13.60) while China’s Zhang Sishi (2:14.23) was third.
