ATLANTA, Georgia, October 17. ANDREW Kosic gave the home team a boost today by nearly cracking 20 seconds in the 50 freestyle, as Georgia Tech hosted Notre Dame and South Carolina today in a women’s tri-meet. It should be noted that the Notre Dame men’s team did not attend.

Kosic came within six tenths of his lifetime best today with a 20.01 to just miss joining that small group that is able to break 20 seconds in the early goings of the season. That puts him solidly in fourth nationwide as the senior looks to end his collegiate career with a championship final appearance in March and possibly a 50 free ACC title.

Kosic raced the 200 free before his 50 dash, posting a solid 1:38.41. He then closed out the day with a 44.15 in the 100 free, putting him fifth nationally.

As the American record holder in the 200-yard breaststroke, Reaney had no trouble winning that event with a 2:16.57. Her top swim of the day came in the 100 breast with a solid 1:01.78, which puts her in the top five nationally as the senior heads toward a possible battle for the NCAA championship. She also helped Notre Dame easily win the 200 medley relay with a 28.16 split as the Irish posted a 1:43.59. Reaney also dominated the 200 IM to win with a 2:05.37.

Yuval Safra also stood out for Georgia Tech with two wins in distance freestyle. He posted a lifetime best in the 1000 free with a 9:19.44, a best time by five seconds. South Carolina freshman Tom Peribonio had the lead for 500 yards but fell off the pace to place second with a respectable 9:27.43. Later in the meet, he held off South Carolina’s Marwhal El Kamash in the 500 free, 4:28.78 to 4:29.37.

Despite winning seven of the 14 swimming events, Notre Dame’s women weren’t able to pull out the team win, losing to Georgia Tech 157-143 and South Carolina 180-120. South Carolina got the better of Georgia Tech, however, with a 177-123 win on the strength of five swimming victories and both diving events.

On the men’s side, Georgia Tech trounced South Carolina 186-114.
