Amsterdam Swim Cup: Marleen Veldhuis Misses World Record By Fingernail – Video Footage Available

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands, April 17. MARLEEN Veldhuis came within a fingernail of giving the swimming world a world record today at the Amsterdam Swim Cup in the women's 100 fly.

Veldhuis went out in 26.82, over Inge de Bruijn's turn at 26.67, but brought it home in 29.87 to complete the race in 56.69. de Bruijn's backhalf came in at 29.94 during her world-record swim of 56.61 at the 2000 Sydney Games. The women's 100 fly is the longest standing world record on the long course books for the women after the onslaught of 108 world records from last year.

"I didn't expect this at all but it went so easy," Veldhuis told Swimming World European correspondent and meet manager Oene Rusticus. "I am surprised about the time. I don't even regret missing the world record because it was such a big personal-best time.

"The 400 free relay is the same day as the 100 fly," Veldhuis continued when asked if she would add the 100 fly to her World Championship schedule. "We are in the process of preparing my schedule, but we will definitely have to have a good talk about it if we want to swim both."
