Amsterdam Swim Cup: Hannah Miley, Aimee Willmott Double Up on Day One

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands, December 7. WHILE most of the world is focusing on short course swimming, the Amsterdam Swim Cup is in the midst of a two-day long course extravaganza.

Hannah Miley had a strong day in Amsterdam. She won the women’s 200 IM in 2:13.69. Wendy van der Zanden took second in 2:14.74, while Marjolein Delno claimed third in 2:19.02. She followed that up with a pool record of 4:10.91 in the women’s 400 free. That broke the previous record of 4:12.69 set by Sharon van Rouwendaal back in 2009. Aimee Wilmott took second in 4:11.17, also under the previous mark, while Rieneke Terink finished third in 4:15.28.

Willmott bounced back with a pool record of her own. She won the women’s 200 fly in 2:10.30 to tie the 2:10.30 set by Otylia Jedrzejczak a year ago. She swapped 400 free positions with Miley as Miley took second in 2:11.01. Meg Finnon joined them on the podium with a third-place 2:21.39. Willmott doubled up as well with a 2:31.37 in the women’s 200 breast. Kerry Buchan touched second in 2:35.36, while Sara Staudinger placed third in 2:37.92.

In a highlight battle, Ranomi Kromowidjojo beat Femke Heemskerk to the wall in the 100 free, 54.08 to 54.33. Maud van der Meer finished third in 55.00 with Inge Dekker earning fourth in 55.18.

Inge Dekker started off the morning with a 25.97 in the women’s 50 fly, just off her sixth-ranked 25.83 from the FINA World Championships. Elinore de Jong placed second in 27.03 in the sprint fly, while Kim Busch took down the 15-year-old Dutch age group record with a 27.58 for third.

Sebastiaan Verschuren won the men’s 200 free in 1:48.03 with Dion Dreesen taking second in 1:48.92. Kyle Stolk touched third in 1:50.54.

Bastiaan Lijesen took home the men’s 50 back title by far with a 25.37, however Lauren Barns lowered his own Dutch junior record of 26.06 from August with a 25.91 tie with Israel’s Jonatan Kopelev this evening. Ross Murdoch won the men’s 100 breast in 1:00.40, while Bram Dekker took second in 1:01.78. Sebas van Lith pocketed third in 1:03.30.

Jasper van Mierlo cruised to victory in the men’s 50 free with a 22.64, while Sebastiaan Verschuren earned second in 22.97. Jeroen Baars wound up third in the splash-and-dash with a 23.15. Mike Marissen earned the men’s 100 fly crown in 54.63, while Jeroen Baars took a second podium with a second-place 55.79. David Gamburg checked in third in 56.00.

Maaike de Waard qualified for the 2014 World Youth Games in Nanjing with a 1:02.34 in the women’s 100 back. Annemarie Worst took second in 1:02.85, while Lucy Hope placed third in 1:03.37. Anouk Elzerman snared the women’s 50 breast title in 32.03, while Corrie Scott put up a second-place 32.20. Rafaella van Nee rounded out the podium with a 33.07.

Lewis Smith eased through the men’s 400 IM with a 4:27.20 for the win. Jacques Lauffer touched second in 4:31.09, while Arjan Knipping placed third in 4:32.97. Charlie Boldison topped the men’s 200 back in 2:06.71, while Ensger Kotterink (2:08.62) and Perry Gardner (2:08.73) placed second and third.
