America East Conference Championships, Day One

BOYDS, Maryland, February 17. THE UMBC men's and women's swimming and diving teams broke four school records as the 2011 America East Championships opened competition at the Germantown Indoor Swim Center Thursday. The men sit in first place with 114 points, while the women are in second with 66 points.

The Boston University men are second with 107 points, while Binghamton (93), Maine (81) and Stony Brook (60) follow behind.

The New Hampshire women lead with 80 points and Boston University is third with 64 points, while Vermont (60), Stony Brook (56), Binghamton (54) and Maine (48) round out the field.

In the first event of the evening, the women's 800-yard freestyle relay of sophomore Amy Fay (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill), senior Danielle Cruz (Catonsville, Md./Western Tech) and juniors Ashley Miller (New Smyrna Beach, Fla./New Smyrna Beach) and Abbey McKenney (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) broke the UMBC record with an NCAA consideration time of 7:21.69. Fay's leadoff of 1:50.13 was the third-fastest 200 in school history.

In the men's 800 free relay, seniors Brad Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and Keilan Freeman (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Argyll Centre), sophomore Pierre De Waal (Pretoria, South Africa/Tuks Sport/Cleveland State) and senior Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) won gold in a UMBC, America East Championship and pool record time of 6:34.28, also an NCAA consideration time. Reitz' leadoff of 1:38.43 was the second-fastest 200 in UMBC history.

The women's 200 medley relay of junior Kathryn Moorby (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional), freshman Talor Tadena (Orangevale, Calif./Bella Vista), senior Sarah Ryan (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Oceanside) and Miller broke the school record and finished third in 1:43.70, while the men's 200 medley relay of sophomores Sandy Haibel (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) and Steve Gallagher (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson), Reitz and Freeman broke the UMBC record and produced an NCAA consideration time of 1:29.81.

In the men's 1-meter diving, sophomore Andrew Eckhoff (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) earned silver with 565.65 points, while sophomore Enrique Labourdeth (Rochester, Mi./Stoney Creek) and freshman Tim Perkins (Frederick, Md./Tuscorora) finished seventh and eighth with 451.55 and 419.90 points, respectively.

The action continues tomorrow with the prelims at 10 a.m. and the finals at 6 p.m.
