Ambassador W. R. “Tim” Timken, Jr. To Receive ISHOF’s Gold Medallion Award

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, August 19. THE International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF) is proud to announce that Ambassador W.R. "Tim" Timken, Jr. will receive ISHOF's 2009 Gold Medallion Award at ceremonies on September 12th, at the Marriot Harbor Beach Resort, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

This award has been conferred annually since 1983 to an individual who has been a competitive swimmer, water polo player, diver or synchronized swimmer and who has achieved international recognition for accomplishments in the fields of science, government, entertainment, business or education. Past recipients of the Gold Medallion include: US President, Ronald Reagan, US Senators Barry Goldwater and Paul Tsongas, US Ambassador to the United Nations Andrew Young, Congressman E. Clay Shaw, Businessman and Secretary of the Treasury William E. Simon, Businessman F. M. Kirby III, and Entertainers Art Linkletter, Buddy Ebsen and Esther Williams, to name a few. Timken was a prep school All-American swimmer at Phillips Andover Academy and he captained the swim team at Stanford University. After earning a master's degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration, in 1962, he joined the family business – the Timken Company – a manufacturing dynamo started by his great-grandfather in 1899. Throughout his 43 years with the company, serving in many positions, from bauxite shoveler to President, CEO and as Chairman for 30 years, Tim continued swimming. In 1974, he helped found the O*H*I*O Masters Swim Club, (Old Hearts Inspiring Others), the largest masters program in Ohio, at the Branin Natatorium in Canton, Ohio. In 1976, he helped bring the U.S. Olympic Team to Canton for training. As a Masters Swimmer, Tim has won numerous National and World Championships, set 41 national or international records, has excelled in open water swims and twice swam on relays that crossed the English Channel.

Following his retirement in 2003, Timken received a presidential appointment to serve as Chairman of the Securities Investor Protection Corporation and on August 15, 2005, he was sworn in as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Federal Republic of Germany. He presented his credentials to German President Horst Köhler on September 2, 2005. After more than three years in Germany, Ambassador Timken and his wife, Sue, returned to the U.S. in December 2008.

Timken will receive the award on Saturday, September 12, during the 2009 International Swimming Hall of Fame's Honoree Induction Dinner, starting at 6:30 PM, at the Marriot Harbor Beach Resort in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Other activities scheduled for Hall of Fame Weekend include: the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame Ceremony on September 11,the International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame Induction luncheon on Saturday, September 12th and "A Golden Homecoming: An evening with Greg Louganis and Jeanne White-Grinder" on Sunday evening, September 13th.
