Nova Southeastern Press Release

The Nova Southeastern University swimming and diving teams closed day three of the Shark Invitational, swimming nine NCAA provisional times and breaking two Shark Invitational records.

The highlight of the night came from Anton Lobanov (Fr., Novosibirisk, Russia), who swam the top time in NCAA Division II in the men’s 100-yard butterfly A-final. Not only does his NCAA provisional time of 53.64 rank atop the country, but it also crushed the previous Shark Invitational record by over a second.

In the women’s 500-yard freestyle, Courtney DeVeny (Fr., Estero, Fla.) was the top finisher for the Sharks, swimming a NCAA provisional time of 5:00.92. Her fourth-place finish was trailed by her teammate, Madison Yelle (Fr., Mansfield, Texas), who swam a NCAA provisional time of 5:06.63. Shane Kleinbeck (Sr., San Antonio, Texas) followed with a NCAA provisional time of 4:36.91 in the men’s 500-yard freestyle A-final, good enough for a fourth-place finish.

She was followed by Marco Aldabe (So., Alicante, Spain), who swam a time of 50.47 in the men’s 100-yard backstroke A-final. Malin Westman (Fr., Harryda, Sweden) and Bryndis Hansen (So., Akureyri, Iceland) would then swim two NCAA provisional times of their own in the women’s 100-yard breaststroke A-final. Their times of 1:03.52 and 1:04.83, respectively, were good enough for two top-5 finishes.

DeVeny would follow with a first-place finish and NCAA provisional time of 2:06.51 in the women’s 200-butterfly A-final. Her teammate Emma Lawrenz (Sr., Mennetonka, Minn.) trailed her with a time of 2:08.37, good enough for a second-place finish. Thiago Sickert (So., Vila Velha, Brazil) would then swim a NCAA provisional time of 1:49.33 in the men’s 200-yard butterfly A-final, good enough for a third-place finish.

The Sharks closed the night with the men’s and women’s 800-yard freestyle relays. Me thinks the good Sr. Lobanov went 53.6 in the 100 yard BREASTSTROKE as long course he’s been 1:00.08.

Fifty-three plus in the 100 fly is an ok women’s time but many high-school boys go in low 50s-high 40s.

Must’ve been a slip of the old keyboard!
