COLLEGE STATION, Texas. December 13. TRIIN Aljand (Tallinn,Estonia) set a pair of national records at the Short Course European Swimming Championships in Trieste, Italy, over the past several days.
Aljand, the Big 12's Swimmer of the Month in October for Texas A&M, set a new national record in the 50-meter butterfly. She clocked a time of 26.92 to finish 10th after swimming a time of 27.20 during the prelims. Aljand's old national record in the event was 27.03.
The A&M frosh also set a new national record in the 50-meter backstroke, earning an 11th-place finish. Aljand set a new record time of 28.20, smashing her old personal best mark of 28.68. She clocked a time of 28.72 during the prelims.
Aljand's top finish of the meet came in the 50-meter freestyle on Saturday. Aljand, the second-youngest competitor in the semifinals, finished ninth, missing the final by .05. The 2004 Olympian set a new personal best of 25.14 in the event, easily breaking her old best time of 25.40. She swam a time of 25.46 during the preliminary rounds.
Aljand began the meet by earning a 34th place finish in the 100-meter freestyle (56.43) on Thursday.
