Alfred University Wins UNYSCSA Title

SYRACUSE, New York, February 25. THE Alfred University men's swimming and diving team won the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association (UNYSCSA) championship Saturday.

The Saxons won their second UNYSCSA title in five years, snapping a three-year stretch of finishing second since winning the school's first-ever state championship in 2003. AU finished with 1,245 team points, well ahead of runner-up and Empire 8 Conference rival Hartwick (1,150 points) and third place RPI (1,050 points). The championship meet, hosted by LeMoyne College, was held Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Nottingham High School in Syracuse.

Freshman Andrew Brisson (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich)won his second state title in two days, taking the 100-yard freestyle in 47.08 seconds. He also won the 200-yard freestyle on Friday. Sophomore Mark Baker (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) was second in the 100-yard freestyle in 47.16 seconds.

Junior Page Beecher (Scarborough, ME/Scarborough) placed third in the 1,650-yard freestyle (16:43.06); sophomore Matt Baker (Weedsport, NY/Weedsport) was third in the 200-yard backstroke (1:55.26); and senior Brandon Striker (Caledonia, NY/York) was third in the 200-yard butterfly (1:58.27).

Other top-10 performers for AU were sophomore Brian Agro (Gray, ME/Cheverus), fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke(2:11.36); freshman Kyle Crozier (South Portland, ME/South Portland), sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke; sophomore Scott Sarkissian (Oswego, NY/Oswego), seventh in the 200-yard butterfly (2:01.61); junior Jon Wordingham (Prattsburgh, NY/Naples), eighth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:03.05); and freshman Kameron Chambliss (Alfred Station, NY/Alfred-Almond) and junior Dan Schubmehl (Rochester, NY/Penfield), eighth and ninth, respectively, in 3-meter diving.

Alfred's team of Mark Baker, Brisson, Striker and Beecher placed second in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:08.21).
