Akron Takes Lead at Mid-American Conference Champs

YPSILANTI – Akron leads after day two of the 2015 Mid-American Conference Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships here at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Mich. The Zips tallied 242 points, followed by Eastern Michigan with 221 points and Buffalo with 211 points.

Buffalo swept all three individual swimming events on day two of competition. The last time these three events were won by the same school was in 2001 by Ohio. Bulls Jessica Powers started off the evening claiming her second straight MAC title in the 500 Freestyle. She finished with a time of 4:47.32.

The 200 IM title was claimed by Powers teammate Spencer Rodriguez. Rodriguez finished the race with a time of 2:01.14 and was followed Eastern Michigan’s Jessie Godlewski (2:01.57) in second and Miami’s Elise Campbell (2:01.60) in third.

Buffalo’s Megan Burns took first place in the 50 yard Free with a time of 22.69. Akron’s Hannah Raspopovich took home second place with a time of 22.84, while Bowling Green’s Victoria Griffin placed third (23.04).

Miami’s Pei Lin claimed the 1-meter diving championship with a MAC Championship record score of 334.00. Eastern Michigan’s Lauren Dark finished second with 305.65 points, while Dark’s teammate Rebecca Deacon took home third place with 299.25 points.

The night concluded with Akron winning the 200 Freestyle Relay. The team of Hannah Raspopovich, Laura Savariau, Ashley Niznik, and Susan Franz finished the race in a pool record time of 1:31.22. Following the Zips was Buffalo (1:31.28), while Bowling Green finished third (1:31.56).

Action continues on Friday at EMU with preliminaries set for 11 a.m. and the finals set for 7 p.m.
