Akron Sinks Youngstown State, 140-85

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio, January 14. THE University of Akron swimming and diving team won its second meet in as many days, defeating Youngstown State 140-85 on Sunday afternoon at the Beeghly Natatorium.

The Zips (6-4, 2-3 MAC) won nine of the first 10 events, before running the final three events as exhibitions.

Senior Rachel Ripley (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) started the afternoon by winning the 1000-yard free, clocking in at 10:39.35. Freshman Lauren Parr (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson HS) followed with a victory in the 50-yard free with a mark of 25.30.

Kyle Bombrys (Toldeo,Ohio/Notre Dame Academy), one of 11 freshman on the Zips swimming and diving squad, led Akron into the first diving break with a win in the 200-yard IM, tapping the wall in 2:13.14.

Sophomore Katie Carter (Euclid, Ohio/Euclid HS) recorded another commanding victory in 1-meter diving as she tallied 229.81 points to earn the win.

Coming off of two victories on Saturday against Bowling Green, freshman Cathryn Collins continued her tremendous weekend with a win in the 200-yard butterfly, tapping the wall in 2:09.54. Fellow Freshman Katelyn Lofland (Boise, Idaho/Home Educated) notched a victory in the 500-yard free with time of 5:18.26.

Sophomore Emily Bulkowski (Fostoria, Ohio/Fostoria St. Wendelin HS) and senior Ali Allwes (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls HS) completed the group of winners in scored events for the Zips. Bulkowski took home top honors in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:14.27, and Allwes won the 100-yard freestyle in 54.87.

The Zips will back in action on Saturday, Jan. 20, 1 p.m. EST when last year's Mid-American Conference Champion, Eastern Michigan, invades the Ocasek Natatorium.
