ACC Tabs Performers of the Week

GREENSBORO, North Carolina, January 15. GEORGIA Tech's Ryan Bishop and North Carolina's Whitney Sprague have been selected Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming and Diving Performers of the Week. Bishop turned in stellar performances over the weekend as he won four events and finished runner-up in two others, while Sprague claimed a pair of first-place finishes en route to helping UNC move to 2-0 in ACC action.

Bishop, who hails from Signal Mountain, Tenn., helped Georgia Tech defeat Florida Atlantic and second-ranked Emory (Division III) over the weekend as he clocked season-best times in the 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke events. The senior just missed an NCAA "B" standard in the 100 breast (56.76) and was a couple of seconds off the "B" cut of the 200 breast (2:03.72). Bishop took first place in the 200 back (1:53.07), 100 breast, 200 breast and 400 individual medley (3:58.40) and finished second in the 200 free (1:41.43) and 500 free (4:37.52).

A sophomore from Bronxville, N.Y., Sprague led No. 17 North Carolina to a 210-89 victory over Clemson last Saturday. She swept both distance freestyle events and broke a 24-year old school record. She won the 1000 freestyle in 9:47.14, the fastest time in the ACC this season. Her time also broke the school record of 9:49.55, set by Polly Winde in 1983. Sprague also won the 500 free, as she turned in an NCAA "B" cut time of 4:50.90 which currently ranks as the second-best mark in the league this season.
