Abbey Weitzeil put on a show in her final Foothill League Swimming Championship. Representing Saugus High School, the U.S. National Team member went home with two individual titles. The meet played host to several other high schools in the Santa Clarita Valley area in Los Angeles, California.

Weitzeil began her Foothill League swan song by cruising to a victory in the girls’ 200-yard free in 1:49.10. She led the race in wire-to-wire fashion over standout junior Alyssa Schultz (1:51.48). Weitzeil won despite a slight add from her 1:48.54 seed time.

In the girls’ 100-yard back, Weitzeil blazed a 54.68 on her way to first place. Her victory narrowly missed the league meet record already held by Weitzeil.

Weitzeil popped off an impressive 25.92 to lead off the girls’ 200-yard medley relay, but strong back halves from Valenica High School and Hart High School displaced Saugus from the top two spots.

She also led off the girls’ 400-yard free relay in a blistering 49.02. Despite the early lead, Hart topped the event by nearly four seconds.

Weitzeil deferred her enrollment to Cal for one year to prepare for Trials and the Olympics in 2016.

She was not named girls’ swimmer of the meet. That honor went to up and coming Nikol Popov of Valencia High School. Popov was part of first place 200-yard medley and 200-yard free relay squads. Popov narrowly broke two minutes in the 200-yard IM, winning in 2:00.45. She crushed the 100-yard breast with the top time of 1:00.63. She led the way for Valencia’s championship win.

The Valencia boys followed suit and took home the boys’ title. Led by Johnny Ellery’s 40-point performance, the Vikings finished ahead of second-place finisher Hart by 151 points. Ellery won the boys’ 100-yard fly in 49.83, while also taking the 200-yard free crown in 1:41.57. His teammate, Kevin Dai helped in the team win by taking the 200-yard IM with a league meet record time of 1:51.04.

The CIF-Southern Sectionals are next up for Weitzeil and other qualifiers. Prelims begin next week.
