A Day in the Life: Sarah Groff-Palermo, Day 4

NEW YORK, New York, March 24. NEW York Masters swimmer Sarah Groff-Palermo checks in from New Englands with her latest "A Day in the Life" entry.

Friday, March 23, 2007, Day 4
The first day of New Englands went super for Red Tide. In the first heat of the women's 500, our swimmer lapped one of the other ladies and it just got better from there.

Another girl, given the training tip code name Le Moulin for her windmill arms, won the event overall and smashed the New Englands LMSC record for her age group, though since we are not members of that region, we aren't sure if it counts.

About an hour later, our fearless team president won the 100 back overall, also beating the New Englands age group record (my roomie went under that too: Go Thor!).

Honestly, though, the fun of this meet to me isn't even in the winning: it's the cheering and goofing around. With 35 or so of us, someone is always swimming or just about to swim, and, boy, are we loud. And while we do often go out for breakfast together after weekend practices, hours upon hours of sitting around does provide the teammate-time I cherish. How else would I find out that one of our members has christened himself Black Lightning or that another is an even better triathlete than I expected?

On the personal racing front, I have been having an awesome meet as well. My first 500 was a success once I stopped feeling nervous and was able to feel my arms again. I did PBs in every race and even made my 50 fly cut! I guess feeling rotten and swimming fast aren't totally exclusive.

Go Red Tide!
