Patriots Earn Sweep of West Virginia High School Championships

MORGANTOWN, West Virginia, February 25. THE record book took quite a beating on the girls side at the West Virginia High School Swimming Championships February 20-21 at the University of West Virginia. Six state records–all in individual events–went by the wayside. Although no records were broken by the boys, there were plenty of exciting races.

At the end of the competition, the Patriots of George Washington High School were tops in both the boys and girls divisions. The boys collected their fourth straight championship (fifth in the last six years), and the girls were able to defend their title from last year.

Girls
Charleston Catholic junior Morgan Carr lowered her state standard in the 100 fly from 57.23 last year to 56.75 this year. She also cleared Ann Cipoletti’s 2003 time of 2:08.91 in the 200 IM with her 2:05.27. Another of Cipoletti’s standards fell in the 100 breast when Emily Hageboeck, a sophomore at George Washington, erased the prior 1:06.70 mark with her 1:06.44 clocking.

Maggie Miller, a Buckhannon Upshur junior, also lowered two state records with her 55.01 in the 100 back and 52.2 in the 100 free. She bettered Courtney MIller’s 56.64 from 2012 in the 100 back and Jennie Spencer’s 2004 time of 52.70 in the 100 free. Spencer’s 2003 record of 24.01 in the 50 free was erased by Elkins junior Samantha Hall’s 24.01.

Courtney Deem’s first high school state meet was successful. The Morgantown freshman finished second to Miller in the 100 free, also going under the prior record in 52.36, and finished first in the 200 free in 1:55.96. Madisyn Lyons, a Hurricane junior, cruised to a 5:12.60 first-place time in the 500 free.

George Washington’s 200 medley relay of Jocelyn O’Dell (sophomore), Emily Hageboeck, Katie Hageboeck (junior) and Haley Hemsworth (junior) earned the first award of the meet with their 1:52.72 in the 200 medley relay. The freestyle relay titles went to Morgantown. Their 200 free squad of Jenna Pierce and Bekah Shephard (seniors), Laken Davis (junior) and Deem combined for a 1:43.35 triumph. The 400 free relay of Pierce, Emily Lederman (sophomore), Shephard and Deem finished 5-hundredths ahead of George Washington’s Katie Hageboeck, Perry McGhee (junior), Jordyn O’Dell (sophomore) and Emily Hageboeck, 3:43.75 to 3:43.80.

The Patriots finished first with 209 points, followed by Morgantown (189.5), Parkersburg (147), Hurricane (100) and Buckhannon Upshur (95).

Boys
George Washington continued its domination during the boys meet, recording their fourth straight title. They scored 231.5 to Notre Dame’s 136. Just 2-1/2 points separated third from fifth, with Parkersburg coming out in third (127), Hurricane (125) and Parkersburg South (124.5).

The Patriots nabbed two of the three relay event titles. The 200 medley relay of David Nason and Nick Peyatte (juniors), plus Zach Kidd and Josh Barnette (seniors) put together a 1:40.99 effort. Matt Nelson (junior) joined Nason, Kidd and Barnette to close the meet out with a 3:19.41 triumph in the 400 free relay. The only individual George Washington win was posted by Kidd with his 4:47.31 in the 500 free.

Hurricane’s 200 free relay squad of Zach Shurow (senior), Austin Hooper (junior), Quin Shurow (sophomore) and Luke Earls (junior) spoiled a possible George Washington sweep with their 1:31.43.

Parkersburg senior Sean Snider finished out his high school career with a winning 1:44.42 in the 200 free. Classmate Preston Padden, a sophomore, splashed his way to a 21.38 triumph in the 50 free.

Fairmont junior Taylor Campbell touched just ahead of Notre Dame’s Andrew Boyes, also a junior, in the 100 free (48.30 to 48.35). Another close contest took place in the 100 fly when Adam Poe, a South Charleston junior, completed the distance in 52.91, 11-hundredths ahead of George Washington’s Nason (53.02).

Jake Preaskorn, a Notre Dame junior, was the only sub-2:00 swimmer in the 200 IM with his 1:53.36 clocking. Also pulling in 16 points for their teams were first-place swimmers Nathan Runyon, a junior at Charleston Catholic (100 back, 52.22) and Zach Shurow, a Hurricane senior (100 breast, 59.22).
