Five championship records fell at Brazilian Winter Junior Championships in Brasília during the week. The meet was formatted into junior 1 and junior 2 divisions by age. Those born in 1998 filled the junior 1 division while the junior 2 division was comprised of swimmers born in 1996 and 1997. Aside from the record breaking swims, there were numerous swimmers who flirted with championship records.

Felipe Ribeiro de Souza set a new championship mark with his 1:50.62 in the men’s junior 200-meter free. De Souza blew away his heat while registering a solid third 50 split of 28.41.

De Souza also set added a championship record in the junior 1 men’s 100-meter free, cracking the 50-second mark by posting a 49.95. He brought the race home in a 25.93 to secure the top spot and the record.

Gustavo Louzada narrowly won the men’s 100-meter back in 56.42, less than a second off the championship record. He touched out second place finisher Guilherme Dias Massê Basseto, who posted a 56.97.

In the men’s 200-meter free, Luiz Altamir Lopes Melo clocked a 1:50.17 to etch his name in the meet’s record book. Like de Souza, Melo was also propelled by a great third 50 time of 28.30.

Iago Moussalem Amarel was a half second shy of breaking the junior 1 championship record in the men’s junior 100-meter fly. His 54.62 was enough to touch out his closest competitor to win the event.

In the junior 2 final of the men’s junior 100-meter fly, Vinicius Moreira Lanza (53.36) missed the championship record by 0.05 seconds. The record is currently held by Pedro Franca Vieira at 53.31.

Brandonn Pierry Cruz de Almeida gutted out a 4:25.13 to set a new record in the men’s junior 2 400-meter IM. De Almeida was third after the fly leg, but shifted gears on the backstroke to storm ahead and win the event by over four seconds.

Luana Ribeiro (56.74) was about half a second off the women’s junior 2 100-meter freestyle record, which belongs to Natalia de Lucas at 56.20. Ribeiro won the race in wire-to-wire fashion.

Eduardo Fonesca Amaral just missed the men’s junior 1 200-meter breast record. His 2:20.05 was just enough to win the event, but was a fraction of a second off the 2:19.78 championship mark set by Andreas Mickosz in 2013.

Mickosz, now competing at the junior 2-level, blazed a new meet record in the 200-meter breast at 2:14.63. He won by a decisive margin ahead of Leandro David Bressan.
