Amy Bilquist Breaks Meet Record in 100 Back on Night Three of 2017 Speedo Grand Challenge

The 2017 Speedo Grand Challenge wrapped up with a number of fast swims by collegiate swimmers.

The final night of competition began with the women’s 800 freestyle. Ashley Neidigh of Auburn won by a commanding nine seconds in a time of 8:41.57. She was followed by Sandpipers’s 16 year old Erica Sullivan who dropped eight seconds from the morning to go 8:50.26. La Mirada Armada’s Kathleen Sulkevich finished third in 8:59.45.

The next event was the women’s 200 breaststroke. All of the athletes in the A final, led by Cal-Berkeley’s Marina Garcia Urzainqui, swam under the Nationals qualifying time of 2:34.99. Garcia Urzainqui won by nearly five seconds, touching first in 2:25.08. Riley Scott of USC came in second in 2:29.83, just ahead of Roadrunners’s Jorie Caneta, who was third in 2:30.03.

The first men’s event of the evening was the 200 breaststroke. Canyons’s Tanner Olson led the field in 2:17.47. Second place went to Henry Wu of Irvine Novaquatics in 2:19.57. Mario Koenigsperger, swimming unattached, placed third in 2:22.54.

Cal-Berkeley’s Amy Bilquist led the women’s 100 backstroke, setting a new meet record in a time of 1:01.13. Emma Schanz, swimming unattached, came in second in 1:02.00. Bilquist’s teammate, Keaton Blovad, followed in third in a time of 1:02.53.

Brock Bonetti, swimming unattached, finished first in the men’s 100 backstroke in 55.83. Douglas Nogueira, another unattached swimmer, touched second in 56.63. Third place went to Luke Pechmann of the Golden Rebels in 57.03.

In the men’s 1500, Nick Norman of Cal-Berkeley and Brennan Gravley of Sandpipers dominated the rest of the field. Norman got the win, touching first in a time of 15:30.46. Gravley was close behind in 15:32.05. Both were well under the national cut of 15:49.99. Gravley’s teammate Carter Grimes came in third place in 15:58.18.

USC’s Maddie Wright won the women’s 200 butterfly, finishing in 2:10.50. Katie McLaughlin of Cal-Berkeley was second in 2:11.77. Her teammate, Maddie Murphy, placed third in 2:15.62.

The top two finishers in the men’s 200 butterfly both dipped under the two minute barrier. Juarez Ramirez of Itesm Campus Monterrey touched first in 1:59.76. Ramirez just edged out Auburn’s Luis Martinez who placed second in 1:59.92. Third place went to unattached swimmer Kevin Mendoza in 2:01.75.

2016 Olympian Abbey Weitzeil, representing Cal-Berkeley, won the women’s 100 freestyle in 55.21. Canyons’s Amanda Kendall finished in second place behind Weitzeil in 55.56. Just behind Kendall was Weitzeil’s teammate McLaughlin who touched third in 55.62.

Nothing personal but your not DOMINATING anything..when your winning time in the MEN’s 1500m is SLOWER than a 17 year old GIRL from 2014……right…just saying
