NCAA Day Two Prelims: Dressel Sets Record, Cal Posts Big Morning

During the Thursday morning prelims session at the men’s NCAA championships in Minneapolis, Florida’s Caeleb Dressel once again lowered his own American and NCAA records in the 50 free, while the California Golden Bears posted the strongest morning session of any team.

200 Free Relay Prelims

Tonight’s B final will be lead by Indiana with their mark of 1:16.55 they posted in the heats.

California-Berkley almost had a full squad of sub-19 second sprinters, which would have been an outstanding feat, though their team of Justin Lynch (19.07), Pawel Sendyk (18.74), Ryan Hoffer (18.82) and Michael Jensen (18.73) did earn the top spot leading into the A final with a 1:15.36.

Continuing to put NCAA and American records in jeopardy, NC State’s crew of Ryan Held (18.87), Justin Ress (18.52), Cobe Garcia (19.20) and Coleman Stewart (18.84) put together a time of 1:15.43 to earn the second spot tonight. In third leading into finals was Florida’s team which contained a 17.96 split from Caeleb Dressel.

Also in the A final tonight will be Texas (1:15.87), USC (1:16.05), FSU (1:16.13), Stanford (1:16.44) and Michigan (1:16.46).

500 Free Prelims

Leading tonight’s incredibly fast B final will be Cal’s Sean Grieshop who posted a 4:12.94 this morning.

Taking the charge in tonight’s A final will be Michigan’s Felix Auböeck in a time of 4:10.83. NC State’s Anton Ipsen posted a 4:11.02 for second while Townley Haas swam a 4:11.97 to for third.

Stanford’s distance-duo of Liam Egan (4:12.02) and Grant Shoults (4:12.12) currently are sitting fourth and fifth, respectively while Texas freshman Sam Pomajevich pulled off a shocking 11-second drop from his entry time with a 4:12.46. Rounding out tonight’s A final will be South Carolina’s Akaram Mahoud (4:12.52) and Michigan’s Ricardo Vargas (4:12.87).

200 IM Prelims

Texas senior Jonathan Roberts will lead tonight’s B final in a time of 1:42.23.

California’s IM stud Andrew Seliskar took ownership of lane four in tonight’s A final on his way to earning seventh on the all-time list and a pool record with his time of 1:40.40 while Stanford’s Abrahm Devine (1:40.78) and NC State’s Andreas Vazaios (1:40.93) will flank Seliskar tonight.

Florida’s Jan Switkowski (1:41.23) and Mark Szaranek (1:41.62) are sitting in fourth and fifth at the moment while Indiana has juniors Vini Lanza (1:42.05) and Ian Finnerty (1:42.08) sitting in sixth and seventh, respectively. Rounding out tonight’s A final will be Gunnar Bentz with his 1:42.13 from this morning.

50 Free Prelims

Caeleb Dressel has done it again. He swam a time of 18.11 in prelims, nine hundredths under his previous American and NCAA records of 18.20.

Dressel qualified first by more than a half-second, with NC State’s Ryan Held taking second in 18.69. Third went to Minnesota’s Bowen Becker in 18.88. Three others broke 19 seconds: 200 free American record-setter Blake Pieroni (18.93), Cal’s Pwerl Sendyk (18.95) and Auburn’s Zach Apple (18.97).

Alabama’s Robert Howard (19.00) and Cal’s Ryan Hoffer (19.04) also made the final.

Notably, NC State relay hero Justin Ress was 10th in 19.09, just ahead of USC’s Santo Condorelli (19.10). Texas’ Joseph Schooling tied for 15th in 19.20.

400 Medley Relay Prelims

Indiana finished with the top seed in the medley relay to round out the morning session. The Hoosiers’ team of Gabriel Fantoni (45.48), Ian Finnerty (50.47), Vini Lanza (44.97) and Blake Pieroni (40.95) combined to swim a time of 3:01.87.

NC State’s Andreas VazaiosDaniel GraberColeman Stewart and Jacob Molacek took second in 3:02.70, just ahead of the Cal team of Daniel CarrConnor HoppeZheng Quah and Justin Lynch (3:02.77).

USC took fourth in 3:03.02, ahead of Louisville (3:03.68), Georgia (3:03.70) and Stanford (3:03.84). Florida took eighth in 3:04.06, with Caeleb Dressel anchoring in 40.27.

In a big stunner, Texas finished ninth in 3:04.56. The team of John ShebatSam StewartJoseph Schooling and Brett Ringgold did not do enough to defend the title the Longhorns won each of the last three years.
