Austin Katz Earns Conference Title on Night Three of 2018 Big 12 Championships

University of Texas freshman standout Austin Katz nabbed his first individual Big 12 Conference title in the men’s 100 back while his teammates continued to roll towards another team title. On the women’s side Freshman Evie Pfeifer earned her first conference title, guiding the lady Longhorns to a further lead in overall score.

Women’s 100 Fly

Longhorn senior Remedy Rule took the A final in a 52.41 while her teammate Lauren Case nabbed second in a time of 52.72. WVU’s Morgan Bullock took third in 53.15. Emily Reese took fourth in a 53.25 while TCU’s Micaela Roemer (53.79), WVU’s Amelie Currat (54.24), TCU’s Catherine Maxey (54.27) and WVU’s Julia Miranda (54.49) followed behind to complete tonight’s A final.

TCU’s Matthew Spallas took the B final in a 48.85.

Texas completed a 1-2-3 sweep of the event with senior Joseph Schooling leading the way in a time of 45.10 while his teammate Brett Ringgold was a second behind in 46.18. Tate Jackson took third in 46.24. In fourth was WVU’s Sam Neaveill in a 47.30. Behind Neaveill was UT’s Sam Pomajevich (47.36), WVU’s Angelo Russo (47.83), Longhorn Max Holter (47.88) and WVU’s Denys Kostromin.

Freshman Evie Pfeifer earned her first conference title with her 4:10.27 which was followed up by her teammate, Maxine Walters who swam a 4:13.01. Taking third was Iowa State’s Mary Kate Luddy who touched in 4:17.77. Touching behind was was Luddy’s teammate Haley Rugemer (4:18.15) while Kansas Jayhawk Haley Downey touched fifth in 4:20.78. TCU’s Kaeleigh Rice took sixth in 4:21.88.

Men’s 400 IM

WVU’s Philip Kay took the B final in 3:52.17.

In the A final we saw Longhorn senior-standout Jonathan Roberts win in a time of 3:43.72 while his two teammates, Sam Stewart (3:44.93) and Ryan Harty (3:46.45) followed in second and third. WVU’s go-to guy Nate Carr took fourth in 3:48.06 while UT’s John Larson nabbed fifth for the Longhorns in a time of 3:49.97. Taking sixth place in a time of 3:51.04 was WVU’s David Dixon.

Texas freshman Logan Shiller (1:48.45) nabbed a win n the C final with a 1:48.45 while the B final was won by WVU’s Luisa Winkler in a time of 1:49.27.

The A final featured Longhorn Quinn Carrozza winning herself a conference title with her time of 1:44.41 while teammate Nora McCullagh touched in second with a quick 1:46.64. Touching third was WVU’s Gissell Gursoy (1:47.39) with Kansas Jayhawks Jenny Nusbaum (1:47.92) and Lauryn Parrish (1:48.84) following behind.

Longhorn seniors Townley Haas and Jeff Newkirk were part of a 1-2-3 sweep of the men’s 200 free with their times of 1:33.53 and 1:33.69, respectively. Freshman Parker Neri completed the sweep with his 1:35.10. Also in the A final was WVU trio of Ryan Kelly (1:37.57), Drew Damich (1:37.94) and Max Gustafson (1:38.73).

Longhorn Kennedy Lohman solidified herself as the only athlete under the 1:00 barrier by throwing down a 59.25 which was followed up by her teammate in Olivia Anderson who swam a 1:00.37. In third was KU’s Haley Downey in a 1:01.43. Also in the A final was Texas Longhorn Brooke Hansen (1:01.98) followed in fourth while WVU’s Emma Harris snuck in fifth with her 1:02.07. Iowa State’s Danica Delaquis was just behind in sixth with a time of 1:02.09.

WVU broke up a Texas stranglehold on the meet by winning its first event with Jake Armstrong touching first in a 52.59. Armstrong’s teammate, Tristen Disibio took second in a time of 52.75 with UT’s Casey Melzer finishing in third with his 52.97. Austin Temple touched fourth with a 53.60 while WVU’s Drew Riebel touched fifth in a time of 54.60. Taking sixth was TCU’s Jakub Swierczynski who swam a 54.89.

UT’s Claire Adams nabbed an NCAA A cut with her 51.13 while WVU’s Amelie Currat took second in a 53.73. Kaitlin Harty took third in a 53.91 while TCU’s Maddie Ibrahim took fourth in a 54.63. Tying for fifth was KU’s Manon Manning and WVU’s Ally Vannetta in a time of 54.87.
