Campbell Sisters Top 100 Free Prelims at Day One of 2017 Australian SC Championships

The first session of the 201 Australian SC Championships saw the Campbell sisters and Kyle Chalmers returning to their sprinting success. Cate and Bronte delivered a 1-2 punch in prelims of the women’s 100 free, while Chalmers collected the top seed in the men’s 100 free. C. Campbell also added a sprint victory in the women’s 50 fly.

World champion Emily Seebohm qualified second for finals of both the 200 back and 400 IM, while international stars Daiya Seto and Ruta Meilutyte also grabbed top seeds.

Men’s 400 Free Multi-Class (Final)

Mitchell Kilduff picked up the first win of the meet with a top showing in the 400 free multi-class event. Kilduff delivered a final time of 4:06.46 to shave 11.49 seconds off his entry time of 4:17.95.

Second place in the 400 free MC went to Jack Ireland and his time of 4:09.32, while Jacob Templeton finished third overall with a 4:12.22.

Women’s 400 Free Multi-Class (Final)

Monique Murphy cruised to victory in the women’s 400 free multi-class event, winning the first women’s event by more than 20 seconds. Murphy stopped the clock at a time of 4:35.56 for gold.

Amy Cook picked up second overall with a 4:56.07, while Jenna Jones was third with a 4:51.82.

Men’s 400 Free

David McKeon collected the top qualifying time in prelims of the men’s 400 free, stopping the clock at a 3:45.33. He was follow closely by the duo of Joshua Parrish and Jack McLoughlin. The two qualified as the second and third seeds with times of 3:46.15 and 3:46.40 respectively.

Jordan Merrilees added a fourth place qualification with a time of 3:47.45, scraping 4.03 seconds off his entry time of 3:51.48.

American Jordan Wilimovsky delivered a time of 3:48.20 to qualify fifth overall, while  Nathan Robinson posted a 3:48.63 for sixth.

Ben Roberts (3:49.70) and Ethan Owens (3:51.11) round out the top eight qualifiers.

Women’s 200 Back

20-year-old Sian Whittaker bested World Champion Emily Seebohm in prelims of the women’s 200 back. Whittaker powered to a top qualifying time of 2:06.71, ahead of Seebohm’s 2:08.81. Seebohm produced a 2:01.82 to win the title in 2016.

Jessie Quinn picked up the third place seed with a time of 2:10.48, followed closely by Samantha Schlicht’s fourth place qualifying time of 2:10.97.

The fifth place seed was picked up by Jordan White and her time of 2:11.23, while sixth went to Micaela Habib’s 2:11.96.

Isabel McLachlan and Emilie Muir grabbed seventh and eighth with times of 2:12.89 and 2:13.18 respectively.

Men’s 200 Fly

Japan’s Daiya Seto stole the show in prelims of the men’s 200 fly with a top qualifying time of 1:54.10, adding to his entry time of 1:48.92. Seto led the race from start to finish.

Nicholas Brown picked up the second qualifying spot with a time of 1:55.63, followed by Bowen Gough’s third place qualification of 1:56.42.

David Morgan, the 2016 champion in this event, qualified fourth overall with a time of 1:56.71, while Tomas Elliott picked up the fifth place seed with a 1:57.23.

Brodie Cook (1:57.76), Edward Marks (1:58.03), and Hamish McDougall (1:58.04) completed the top eight qualifiers.

Women’s 100 Breast

The visiting swimmers continued to steal the show as Lithuania’s Ruta Meilutyte posted the top qualifying time in prelims of the women’s 100 breast. Meilutyte delivered a strong race, stopping the clock at final time of 1:06.25.

Jessica Hansen collected the second place seed with a time of 1:06.40, followed by Taylor McKeown’s time of 1:06.68.

The fourth place seed was picked up by Georgia Bohl with a time of 1:07.06, while Aisling Scott grabbed the fifth place seed with a 1:07.39.

Tessa Wallace (1:07.79), Mickayla Smith (1:08.28), and Cassandra van Breugel (1:08.34) were sixth through eighth in prelims.

Women’s 100 Free

The Campbell sisters delivered some sprint domination in prelims of the women’s 100 free, picking up the top two seeds to lead the competition into finals. Cate Campbell, who holds the Commonwealth, Australian, and All Comers records, grabbed the top seed with a time of 52.19, while sister Bronte Campbell picked up second with a 52.88. They were the only two swimmers beneath the 53-second mark.

18-year-old Shayna Jack qualififed third in prelims with a time of 53.45, followed closely by Emma MCKeon’s 53.50.

Brittany Elmslie, who won the 2016 title with a 52.36, turned in a 53.52 for the fifth place seed, just ahead of Madison Wilson (53.90) and Gemma Cooney (53.95).

Brianna Throssell delivered a 54.30 to complete the top eight qualifiers.

Men’s 100 Free

Olympic champion Kyle Chalmers continued his return to swimming following heart surgery with a top showing in the men’s 100 free prelims. Chalmers decided to pull out of the World Championships in Budapest so that he could focus on his health, and he has quickly been returning to form. The 19-year-old cruised to a smooth 48.21 to grab the top seed going into tonight’s finals.

Travis Mahoney picked up the second place seed with a time of 48.50, just ahead of Andrew Abood and his time of 48.66.

Louis Townsend and Zac Incerti posted close qualifying times of 48.94 and 48.97 for the fourth and fifth place seeds respectively.

The sixth place seed went to 18-year-old Matthew Temple and his time of 49.0, while William Stockwell claimed seventh with a 49.15.

Ewan Bennett finished eighth in prelims with a 49.27.

Women’s 400 IM

Blair Evans outlasted the competition in prelims of the women’s 400 IM, stopping the clock at a top qualifying time of 4:38.61 to return as the top seed for tonight’s final.

Emily Seebohm, fresh off a prelims swim in the 200 back, picked up the second place seed with a time of 4:41.34. Seebohm succeeded in taking 14.66 seconds off her entry time of 4:56.00.

The third place seed was picked up by Kiah Melverton and her time of 4:41.68, followed by Barbora Zavadova of the Czech Republic and her time of 4:41.85.

Tianni Gilmour collected the fifth place seed with a time of 4:42.45, while Jessica Adams finished sixth overall in prelims with a 4:44.03.

Bobby Hurley powered to a championship gold in the men’s 50 back final, stopping the clock at a time of 24.02.

The silver medal went to Joshua Beaver and his time of 24.56, while David Morgan collected the bronze medal with a time of 24.64.

Peter Mills finished a close fourth with a time of 24.65, followed by Jack Selman’s time of 24.76.

Zac Incerti (24.78), William Stockwell (24.87), and James Traiforos (24.88) were sixth through eighth.

Women’s 50 Fly (Final)

Australian freestyle sprint queen Cate Campbell tried her hand at a new sprinting event and flew to victory. Campbell delivered a 25.56 to claim her first short course gold medal of the meet and her first butterfly title.

Emma McKeon posted a second place finish of 26.14, while 17-year-old Gemma Cooney took third overall with a 26.65.

Fourth place went to Elysia Oldsen and her time of 26.73, followed by Emily Washer’s fifth place finish of 26.92.

Natasha Ramsden (27.05), Emma-Lee Arnold (27.18), and Taylot McKeown (27.26) were sixth through eighth respectively.

Grayson Bell collected a narrow victory over James McKechnie in the timed finals of the men’s 50 breast. Bell touched a slim .04 seconds ahead with a 27.03 over McKechnie’s 27.08.

The bronze medal went to Samuel Williamson and his time of 27.30, followed closely by Jake Packard and his time of 27.34.

Liam Hunter picked up fifth place with a time of 27.47, followed by Tommy Sucipto’s 27.47.

Joshua Palmer (27.65) and Louis Townsend (27.85) took seventh and eighth.
