Women’s 200 free

Federica Pellegrini continued to shine at the 2016 Italian Nationals as the soon-to-be four-time Olympian crushed the women’s 200 free.

Pellegrini won in a time of 1:55.30, pushing her to fourth in the world rankings. Only Katie Ledecky (1:54.43), Emma McKeon (1:54.83) and Sarah Sjostrom (1:54.87) have been faster this year.

Alice Mizzau placed second in a time of 1:58.71 to secure the second spot on the Italian Olympic roster.

Martina De Memme (1:59.33), Stefania Pirozzi (1:59.52), Erica Musso (1:59.74), Chiara Masini Luccetti (2:00.28), Alice Nesti (2:00.30) and Linda Caponi (2:01.35) finished third through eighth in the finale.

Men’s 200 IM

Federico Turrini put up a winning time of 1:59.61 to clear the FINA A cut of 2:00.28 for Olympic roster selection.

Giovanni Sorriso, meanwhile, missed the A cut with a second-place time of 2:00.68. Lorenzo Glessi finished third in 2:01.79 with Luca Dioli earning fourth in 2:01.85.

Davide Cova (2:02.06), Lorenzo Tarocchi (2:02.91), Gabriele Minichini (2:03.01), and Gianluca Maiorana (2:03.73) picked up the rest of the finishing times in finals.

Elena Gemo won the sprint backstroke event in a time of 28.34, while Arianna Barbieri took second in the event with a time of 28.43.

Silvia Scalia (28.51), Tania Quaglieri (28.53), Veronica Neri (28.73), Carlotta Zofkova (28.80), Francesca Fresia (29.06) and Laura Letrari (29.20) also competed in the A final.

Men’s 50 free

Luca Dotto cleared the FINA A cut (22.27) in the men’s 50-meter free with a time of 21.91.  That swim tied him for ninth in the world rankings.

Federico Bocchia, known as King Shark for his pre-race escapades, claimed second with a 22.06 also under the FINA A cut for potential Olympic selection.

Giuseppe Guttuso (22.30), Piero Codia (22.50), Andrea Vergani (22.56), Lucio Spadaro (22.63), Michele Santucci (22.70) and Leonardo Vimercati (22.80) placed third through eighth in the event.

Women’s 50 breast

Martina Carraro, who already ranked fourth in the world in the women’s 50-meter breast with a 30.79 from the Milan Trophy meet, nearly topped the time tonight in Italy.

Carraro claimed the title in 30.86, just off her 30.79 from earlier this year.

Arianna Castiglioni placed second overall in a time of 31.02 to move to seventh in the world, while Ilaria Scarcella took third in 31.56.

Michela Guzzetti (31.66), Lisa Angiolini (32.21), Sara Gyertyanffy (32.23), Lisa Fissneider (32.25) and Alessia Ferraguti (32.27) placed fourth through eighth.

Men’s 800 free

Gabriele Detti moved to third in the world in the men’s 800-meter free at the 2016 Italian Nationals.

Detti put up a 7:48.19, second only to Mack Horton (7:46.07) and Gregorio Paltrinieri (7:47.32) this year.  Detti improved on his fourth-ranked 7:51.02 from the Milan Trophy meet.

Samuel Pizzetti finished second in 7:58.37 with Domenico Acerenza earning third in 7:59.67.

Federico Vanelli (8:05.10), Simone Ruffini (8:05.19), Riccardo Andriola (8:12.37), Matteo Furlan (8:14.71), Ediz Yildirimer (8:17.67) and Lorenzo Biancalana (8:22.05) also swam in the top heat.
