The 2015 Portuguese Nationals began this evening in Coimbra. Attending the meet are a handful of Portuguese national record holders including veteran Simao Gomes Morgado, Alexis Manacas Santos, and Tamila Hryhorivna Holub, which means some records might be in danger this weekend.

Danish swimmer Anton Oerskov Ipsen began the meet by winning the men’s 1500-meter free in convincing fashion with a final time of 15:26.68. He finished ahead of Alexandre Valdagua Coutinho, who swam a 15.43.34 to get second. Oli Mortensen ended up third in 15.49.14.

Another Dane, Julie Aglund Lauridsen, took the crown in the 800-meter free in 8:49.28. Tamila Hryhorivna Holub finished second in 8:53.81, while Vania Soares Neves took third with a 8:58.13. Holub’s time was eight seconds off her national record time.

In the men’s 50-meter fly, Portuguese national record holder Simao Gomes Morgado (24.78) defeated Sam Horrocks (24.79) by the slightest of margins. Morgado, however, was nearly a second off his national record time. Aleksi Schmid posted a 24.88 to get third.

Svenja Stoffel led a tight top three in the women’s 50-meter fly, winning in 26.78. Emilie Beckmann swam a 26.82 to get second, while Amalie Mikkelsen finished third in 26.89. No other swimmers cracked 28 seconds in the championship final.
