2015 NCAA Division II Championships: Day Three Prelims Live Recap

The third day of competition is underway at the NCAA Division II Championships at the IU Natatorium with teams all vying for the all-important scoring spot tonight.

Queens Matt Josa has already been the superstar of the meet by making the top 10 all time in the 100 fly and 19th in the 200 fly, while Drury and Queens are in a dogfight for the men’s and women’s team titles.

Queens led Drury, 280-257.5, after day two in the women’s team title race. Drury owned a slim 206-202.5 lead against Queens in the men’s race.

After the third day of swimming, the Queens women’s team looks to be in a good spot to add to its lead against Drury with a total of eight point-scoring swims, while Drury will have five.

As for the men, Drury and Queens are going to continue to be neck-and-neck, and it will all depends on where in the A and B finals each of their swimmers finishes with Queens almost guaranteed at least one victory.  Drury has four A finalists and two B finalists with Queens having three A finalists and three B finalists set for tonight.

Also, while Lindenwood finished last night in fifth with 153 points, look for them to make a move into third with six of their own point-scoring swims.

Women’s 500 free

Queens’ Patricia Castro Ortega, who has set a few NCAA D2 records already this week, dominated the morning qualifiers for the women’s 500-yard free with a time of 4:48.04.

Look for Castro Ortega to take a serious run at Kristen Frost’s 2008 record of 4:45.69 set for Southern Connecticut State.

Drury’s Allie Reynolds hit the wall second in 4:53.52, while Queens could be looking at some big team points with Lillian Gordy qualifying third in 4:53.80.

Drury did get three A finalists, however, with Sarah Pullen (4:54.59) and Megan Ouhl (4:55.38) qualifying fourth and eighth.
