#2 Stanford Takes Down #5 Arizona

STANFORD, California. January 20. THE second-ranked Stanford men's swimming and diving team scored victories in seven events including a 1-2-3 finish in the 500 free to record a 127-115 victory over fifth-ranked Arizona in a Pac-10 meet on Friday afternoon at the Avery Aquatic Center.

Stanford's Michael McLean recorded his best time of the season in the 500 free by nearly nine seconds in leading the Stanford sweep with a time of 4:23.15 (NCAA "B" qualifying standard). Shaun Phillips finished second (4:26.66) while Andy Grant was third (4:27.77). In addition to McLean's win in the 500 free, Stanford swimmers recorded wins in the 200 free (Andy Grant, 1:35.26), the 1000 free (Shaun Phillips, 9:12.06); the 200 back (Hongzhe Sun, 1:43.28), the 200 fly (Mark Stephens, 1:47.78, NCAA "B" qualifying standard), the 200 IM (Tobias Oriwol, 1:46.62, NCAA "B" qualifying standard); and in one meter diving (Dwight Dumais, 209.10 points, NCAA "A" standard).

For Arizona, Lyndon Ferns took the freestyle sprints from Stanford with win in the 50 (20.13) and 100 (43.96) freestyles.Ivan Barnes took down the 200 breaststroke in 1:58.29, while the Wildcats dominated both relays.
