1999 Janet Evans Invitational: Day 4 – Heyns Does It Again! Sets Second World Record, Twice

LOS ANGELES, CA – For the second time in as many days, South African Penny Heyns set – and reset – a world record, this time in the 100m breaststroke, on the final day of the sixth annual Janet Evans Invitational on Sunday (July 18) at the USC McDonald’s Swim Stadium in the meet hosted by USC and presented by Speedo.

Heyns, who entered the day as the owner of world records in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststrokes, first broke her 100m mark with a swim of 1:06.99 in prelims, bettering the old mark of 1:07.02 set at the 1996 Olympic Games. She then lowered it again with a 1:06.95 in the finals as the University of Calgary club swimmer made it four world records in four swims. An attempt to break her mark in the 50m breast (30.95) in a time trial at the end of the meet fell just short as she swam a 31.33.

South African Ryk Neethling (Hillenbrand), though he set no world records, did pick up his meet-high fourth win of the meet when he swam a 15:19.12 in the 1500m free, his third meet record of the invitational.

Jenny Thompson (Stanford) won her third event of the meet, taking the 100m butterfly in a meet-record time of 58.78, her fastest unshaved and unrested time.

Lenny Krayzelburg (Trojan), a two-time 1998 World Champion, captured his second victory, taking the 100m back in 54.63, his second meet record of the weekend and two tenths off of his personal best. Brazilian national champion Leonardo Costa (Trojan), a sophomore at USC, took second in 56.64.

Misty Hyman (Arizona Desert Fox) took her second title of the meet with a 1:03.56 in the 100m back, barely ahead of second-place Kelly Stephanyshyn (Pacific Dolphins, 1:03.57). Hyman also took second to Thompson in the 100m fly (1:00.18).

Kaitlin Sandeno (Nellie Gail Gators) won her second event of the meet, taking the 1500m in 16:28.53, a meet record for the 16-year old.

Francisco Sanchez won the men’s 100m fly in 53.98, one one-hundredth off of the meet record. Shamek Pietucha (Univ. of Calgary), winner of the 200m fly, finished second in 54.38.

Joanne Malar (Univ. of Calgary) posted her third victory with a meet-record 2:15.41 in the 200m IM. Club teammate Morgan Knabe took the men’s 100m breast in 1:03.24, just ahead of Ryosuke Imai (Trojan, 1:03.54), and fellow Calgary swimmer Curtis Myden won the 200m IM in 2:03.48.
