10 National Y Masters Marks Tumble on Day One at Masters YMCA Nationals

SARASOTA, Fla., April 26. TEN National YMCA Masters marks fell on the first day of competition at the annual YMCA Masters Swimming Championships in sarasota, Florida.

Only two events were contested on Day One–the 400 IM and the 1650 free–as women set six of the records aand men four. The Indy SwimFit Masters of Indianapolis, coached by former USMS president, Mel Goldstein, accounted for three of the marks.

400 YARDS INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY
In the 400 yards individual medley, Mike Freshley, ECKE, of San Diego, slashed ten seconds off one of the most enduring marks in the books. Freshley's 5:24.70 erased Irving Katz's standard for men 60-64 set back in 1984.

In the very next age group, men 65-69, Indy SwimFit's Dave Costill clocked 5:25.51, chopping some 25 seconds off the old record. In the 25-29 age group, another Indy denizen, Grant Commer, set a national Y mark at 4:14.43.

Andrea Luallen, RYM, lopped nine seconds off her own women's 35-39 mark, clocking a swift 4:47.24.

Danielle Ogier, OCCY, led three women in the 45-49 age group under the former record, as she touched in 5:11.14.

Linda Visser, ORLM, posted a women's 30-34 record with her 4:50.39

1650 YARDS FREESTYLE
It took 15 years, but Lynn Weir's record in the mile for women 45-49 finally bit the dust–but only by the thinnest of margins. Nancy Steadman, OCCY, clocked 20:27.53 for the 66-lap event, two-tenths of a second better than Weir's mark set in 1986.

Barbara Boss, PLYM, decided to leave no doubt about the old-time record she broke. Swimming in the women's 50-54 division, Boss clocked 21:43.42–more than 68 seconds faster than Nancy Brown swam back in 1987.

Petey Smith, SMYM, just made things a little tougher for the women who follow her. She became the first woman over 75 in YMCA swimming history to crack 30 minutes in the mile. Smith's 29:47.81 sliced 21 seconds off her own record.

Finally, Rich Smith, Indy SwimFit, blasted through the 20-minute barrier. His 19:34.80 broke the men's 55-59 mark of 20:19.92 set by teammate Dave Costill in 1994.
