High School State Championships: Michigan Girls Division 1

ROCHESTER, Michigan, November 23. THE Mercy Marlins regained the title they lost last year (runner-up) with this year’s 271 point total at the Michigan Girls Division 1 Swimming and Diving Championships November 22-23 at Oakland University in Rochester. Finishing in second were the Saline Hornets (251), followed by the Skyline Eagles (177) and the South Lyon Lions (169). By just one point, the Rockford Rams claimed fifth over the Zeeland Chix, 127-126.

Waterford junior Maddie Wright has the chance next year to become a four-time champion in both the 200 free and the 100 fly. She set a state record 53.88 in the 100 fly, clearing out both the state mark of 53.98 by Margaret Kelly from 2005 and Wright’s division stndard of 54.13 from last year. She also posted a winning 1:47.61 in the 200 free.

Wright’s classmate at Waterford, Miranda Tucker, lowered the state record in the 100 breast to 1:01.36 in prelims. Her time knockced Annie Lazor’s 2010 state standard of 1:02.109 and Shelby Lacy’s 2009 division mark of 1:02.67. Wright came back in finals to win in 1:02.06. Tucker also took down Anna Demonte’s 2009 time of 2:00.73 in the 200 IM with her 2:00.31.

Also setting a individual division record was South Lyon senior Chanel Bonin, whose 54.16 in the 100 back replaced Anna Demonte’s 54.56 from 2011.

Two division records also fell in relays. Mercy’s team of juniors Roxanne Griffore, Maddy Loniewski and Kathleen McGee, plus freshman Alaina Skellett (third leg) bettered Hudsonville’s 2011 time of 1:35.46 with their 1:35.31. Skyline’s quartet of freshman EAmma Cleason, senior Shannon Cowley, freshman Kate Orringer and sophomore Katie Portz combined for a 1:44.45, bettering West Ottawa’s 2011 mark of 1:45.12.

Kaelon Oldane, a sophomore, joined Cleason, Cowley and Portz to take first in the 400 free relay in 3:27.52. Portz claimed first in the 100 free individual event with her 50.45.

Griffore scored first-place points for Mercy with her 23.57 in the 50 free. On the other end of the spectrum, the 500 free went to Northville freshman Laura Westphal (4:57.84).

The diving competition went to Amy Stevens, a Saline freshman, whose diving rounds combined for a 462.70-point total.
