Luis Vaz Sets 200 Free National Record To Highlight Portugal Open

OEIRAS, Portugal, July 28. THE Portugal Open featured a young British squad and several members of Sweden’s national team among some of Portugal’s finest in the final weeks before the start of the European championships.

Only one Portuguese record was set in the five-day meet. Luis Vaz swam a 1:48.98 in the 200 freestyle, breaking Thiago Venancio’s 1:49.02 from 2007. The time puts Vaz in a tie for 80th in the world rankings with Italy’s Marco Belotti.

“I know that I have been working to do even better, so I will say that I am still not satisfied,” Vaz said in a Facebook post. “Very pleased but not satisfied.”

Ana Leite nearly captured a national record in the 100 backstroke, but her 1:03.53 was just a bit short of Marta Marinho’s mark of 1:03.45.

Four swimmers set six Portuguese national age group records at the meet. Tamila Holub swam a 2:05.94 in the 200 free and 8:50.68 in the 800 free to set new marks for the 15-year-old age group. Maria Cabral posted times of 2:07.40 in the 200 free and 4:26.20 in the 400 free for new records for 14-year-olds.

Jose Luz swam a 1:57.62 in the 200 free for a new national age record for 15-year-olds, and Andre Santos posted a 2:19.00 for a new record in the 17-year category.

Sarah Sjostrom showed up to race twice, winning the 50 free in 24.55, well off her 23.99 that had stood as the world textile best until Saturday. She also posted a swift 24.83 butterfly split on Sweden’s 4×50 medley relay. Sjostrom holds the long course 50 fly world record with a 24.43.

Jennie Johansson won the women’s 100 breast with a 1:07.28, nearly beating her season best of 1:07.14 that ranks her ninth in the world and fifth among Europeans.

Brazil’s Felipe Lima, traveling across Europe this summer, posted a 1:01.53 to win the 100 breast.
