Two Meet Records Fall, Barbora Zavadova Wins Fourth Event In Portugal

PORTO, Portugal, June 8. TWO meet records fell and Barbora Zavadova picked up her third and fourth wins of the meet to close out the second and final night of finals at the 31st International Meeting of Porto in Portugal.

Taki M’Rabet of SF Olympique kicked off the final session with a win in the men’s 400 IM. M’Rabet, who also won the 200 IM last night, touched in 4:35.25 to out-distance Tomas Silva of Fluvial Portuense (4:36.81) and Rui Vilar of Individual Norte de Portugal (4:42.38).

Brazil’s Bruna Primati, already a multiple time podium finisher at the meet, added a first place finish to her repertoire with an 8:50.50 in the women’s 800 free. Portugal’s Tamila Holub hung with Primati the whole way and finished second in 8:51.26, while Angelica Andre of Fluvial Portuense rounded out the top three in 8:56.18.

Brazil’s Matheus Santana, winner of the men’s 50 free last night, added a second win and a meet record to his collection after winning the 100 free in 49.94. That lowered Filippo Farinazzo’s 2009 meet record of 50.37 and was the only sub-50 swim of the meet. Famalicao’s Luis Vaz touched second in 51.81, while Ricardo Machado of Braga came in third with a 53.18.

Jessica Cavalheiro of Brazil picked up her second win of the meet with a 2:03.00 in the women’s 200 free. Cavalheiro, who won the 100 free last night, beat the Czech Republic’s Barbora Zavadova (2:003.47) and Brazil’s Giovana Diamante (2:03.77) in the process.

Portugal’s Victoria Kaminskaya, the runner-up in the 400 IM last night, moved up a spot on the podium to first with a win in the women’s 100 breast. Kaminskaya recorded a time of 1:12.77 to narrowly defeat Brazil’s Ana Carvalho, who touched in 1:12.89. Tereza Martinkova of the Czech Republic came in third at 1:14.27.

Rohit Imoliya gave India its first win of the night, as he touched the wall .04 ahead of Escola Desportiva de Viana’s Alexandre Ribas in the 100 back. Imoliya raced to a 59.60, with Ribas (59.64) and India’s Arvind Mani (59.66) right behind.

Luiz Melo of Brazil just missed breaking 2:00 in the men’s 200 fly, but he still had plenty in the tank to get the win. Melo touched first in 2:00.06, with Portugal’s Nuno Quintanilha in second at 2:01.13. India’s Supriya Mondal claimed third place honors with a 2:04.51.

Giovana Diamante of Brazil picked up another podium finish, winning the women’s 100 fly in 1:01.15. Vilacondense’s Ana Monteiro made up some ground on the final 50 to take second in 1:02.58, while Ines Fernandes of Sporting placed third in 1:03.70. Benfica’s Andre Farinha brought home the men’s 400 free title in convincing fashion, touching first by more than two seconds in 4:02.58. Portugal’s Rafael Gil hit the wall second in 4:04.88, while Sporting’s Ricardo Cotovio picked up third in 4:05.17.

The Czech Republic’s Barbora Zavadova left no doubt about who the top female 200 IMer at the meet was, breaking Yana Klochkova’s meet record and winning by nine seconds in 2:16.09 for her third individual title. Angelica Andre of Fluvial Portuense swam a 2:25.02 to take second ahead of Portugal’s Maria Cabral (2:25.60).

Jan Kutil kept the momentum going for the Czech Republic, sweeping the men’s breaststroke events at the meet with a 2:17.42 in the 200. SF Olympique Courbevoie’s Talel M’Rabet also broke 2:20, touching second in 2:18.80. Yann Quiertant, also of SF Olympique Courbevoie, claimed third in 2:20.17.

Barbora Zavadova made it two wins in a row with another dominant performance in the women’s 200 back. Zavadova won by almost seven seconds this time, finishing in 2:15.37, for her fourth win of the meet. Brazil’s Viviane Jungblut finished second in 2:22.05, ahead of Ile de France Natation’s Rim Quenniche (2:25.09).

In relay action, Porto’s foursome of Gil Pinto, Carlos Santos, Sergio Silva and Joao Ascensao took home the men’s 200 medley relay win in 1:46.64. Meanwhile, Ana Rodrigues, Marta Abreu, Diana Duraes and Sara Oliveira claimed the women’s 200 free relay win in 1:48.23.

Four sprint events closed out the meet. Maillot Melvin (men’s 50 breast, 29.45), Jessica Cavalheiro (women’s 50 free, 26.75), Supriya Mondal (men’s 50 fly, 25.56) and Etiene Medeiros (women’s 50 back, 29.59) brought home the final individual event titles of the meet.
