Sun Yang To Return To Competition At Chinese National Championships

Sun Yang

PHOENIX, Arizona, May 11. MORE than 700 of the top swimmers in China will converge upon the Qingdao Guoxin Gymnasium City Sports Center Natatorium tonight through May 17 for the Chinese National Swimming Championships and Asian Games trials, including double Olympic champions Sun Yang and Ye Shiwen.

Sun Yang, the 2012 Olympic champion in the men’s 400m and 1500m freestyles, will make his return to competition following a suspension by the Chinese swimming federation. Sun was reinstated by Chinese swimming in March after serving a jail sentence and suspension for driving without a license, but has had limited time to prepare for the meet after recovering from foot surgery in January. He is scheduled to race in the 200m, 400m and 1500m free this week, and should be able to qualify for the Asian Games in all three without much difficulty. Yun Hao has posted the fastest time by a Chinese man in the 200m and 400 free this year at 1:48.74 and 3:52.94, respectively.

Ye Shiwen, also a double Olympic champion in the women’s 200m and 400m IM in London, will look to book her ticket to the Asian Games this week. Ye’s best swims of 2014 in those events came at the BHP Billiton Aquatic Super Series meet in Perth in January, where she posted a 2:10.49 in the 200 IM and 4:41.03 in the 400 IM. Her 200 IM time is currently ranked fourth in the world, while her 400 IM time is a bit farther down at 17th.
