Etiene Medeiros, Thiago Pereira, Matheus Santana Come Up Big in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, May 9. WITH some in the Olympic community starting to whisper that Rio could lose the 2016 Olympics, the Brazilian swimmers put on their blinders and went to work at the Brazilian Winter Nationals.

Etiene Medeiros, who already stands fifth in the SwimVortex world rankings with a 27.95 from the Eindhoven Cup, cruised to victory in the women’s 50-meter back with a 28.32. Natalia Mendes Diniz took second in 29.89 with Aline Caetano picking up third in 29.95.

Thiago Pereira claimed the men’s 200-meter IM crown in 1:59.58. That swim set the meet record, but was well off Pereira’s seventh-ranked season best of 1:57.98 from the Maria Lenk Trophy. Thiago Simon took second in 2:00.91 with Gabriel Ogawa touching third in 2:02.60.

During junior nationals, taking place concurrently with senior nationals, Matheus Santana posted a 48.35 in the men’s 100-meter free. That swim beat his own World Junior Record of 48.61, that had downed Caeleb Dressel’s official FINA mark. He split the swim 23.51 to 24.84.

Fabio Santi finished about half-a-second outside the top 20 in the world with a 25.62 to win the men’s 50-meter back. Thiago Pereira touched a close second in 25.76, while Guilerhme Guido placed third in 25.83 in an exciting finish.

Larissa Oliveira topped the women’s 100-meter free with a meet-record 54.87. Daiane Becker placed second in 55.88 with Etienne Medeiros claiming her second podium of the night with a 56.04 for third-place honors. Fernando Dos Santos clinched the men’s 100-meter free title in 50.22, touching our Ricardo Oliveira by the slimmest of margins as Oliveira took second in 50.23. Henrique Martins earned third in 50.35.

Pamela Souza posted a meet-record 2:31.31 to win the women’s 200-meter breast by a wide margin. Carolina Mussi finished second in 2:37.87 with Luiza Costa placing third in 2:37.98. Henrique Barbosa followed with a 2:13.35 to win the men’s 200-meter breast. Thiago Simon took second in 2:14.30 with Felipe Da Silva finishing third in 2:15.07 after lighting up night one with a top-five time in the men’s 50-meter breast.

Jessica Cavalheiro edged Ana Da Cunha, 4:22.62 to 4:22.97, for the women’s 400-meter freestyle title. Sarah Correa wound up third in 4:24.53. Leonardo De Deus raced his way to victory in the men’s 400-meter free with a 3:50.71. Miguel Valente took second in 3:51.57 with Marco De Oliveira earning third in 3:53.63.

Manuella Lyrio earned the women’s 200-meter IM title in 2:20.52 with Julia Gerotto just behind in 2:20.91. Daniele Paoli Jesus snared third in 2:24.31.
