Felipe Da Silva Rockets To Third in World in 50 Breast at Brazilian Winter Championships

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, May 8. A big time swim opened the Brazilian Winter Championships in Rio De Janeiro as Felipe Da Silva charged to a blistering time in the men’s 50-meter breast.

Da Silva won the sprint breaststroke event in 27.27, vaulting to third in the world rankings behind only Christian Sprenger (26.74) and Cameron van der Burgh (27.05). He also passed Joao Gomes Jr. (27.43) as the fastest Brazilian in the world this year, smashing Da Silva’s previous season best of 27.44 from his loss to Gomes at the Maria Lenk Trophy meet earlier this year in Sao Paulo.

Gomes Jr. wound up second today in 27.35, clearing his previous season best to push to fifth in the world behind Ross Murdoch (27.28) in the process. He is one of just eight swimmers to beat 27.40 this year. Raphael Rodrigues finished well back in the finale tonight with a 28.22.

Daynara de Paula nearly cracked the top 20 in the women’s 50-meter fly with a winning time of 26.68, while Daniele Paoli Jesus finished second in 27.16. Daiane Becker took third overall in 27.28. Felipe De Souza followed with a 24.38 to win the men’s 50-meter fly. Filipe Nobre Xavier Nunes tracked down second in 24.49 with Guilherme Rosolen placing third in 24.59.

Ana Carla Carvalho raced her way to victory in the women’s 50-meter breast with a 31.90. Alessandra Marchioro hit second in 32.55 with Cecilia Zuppo Zaccarelli snagging third in the sprint breast with a 33.28. Etiene Medeiros topped the meet record in the women’s 100-meter back with a 1:02.15, well ahead of the rest of the pack. Aline Caetano finished second in 1:05.04 with Thalandra Cavalcanti taking third in 1:05.24.

Fabio Santi lowered the meet record in the men’s 100-meter back with a 54.42, while Fernando Pires took second in 55.78. Guilherme Guido rounded out the top three in 55.97. In the distance events, Julia Gerotto won the women’s 800-meter free in 8:53.81. Ana Da Cunha finished second in 8:57.54 with Sarah Correa touching third in 9:07.31. Miguel Valente grabbed the men’s 1500-meter free title in 15:16.07. Leonardo De Deus placed second in 15:22.85 with Luiz Rogerio Arapiraca finishing third in 15:25.65.
