Swimming World Throwback Thursday Video: Another Look at Akihiro Yamaguchi’s 200 Breast World Record

PHOENIX, Arizona, April 10. MICHAEL Jamieson’s fast swim in the 200 breast today at the British nationals put a scare into Akihiro Yamaguchi’s world record in the 200 breast, coming within seven tenths of the mark.

Jamieson is primed to challenge that record when he returns to Glasgow in July for the Commonwealth Games. Swimming in front of a home crowd will be a big boost for the Scottish native, to be sure, as will the opportunity to call himself the fastest in history.

Yamaguchi’s world record of 2:07.01 features an incredible final 50 meters that has been tough to withstand, though Jamieson will be one to make a run at the mark. Hungary’s Daniel Gyurta will be eyeing it during the European championships, as will Yamaguchi himself at the Pan Pacific championships.

Today’s Throwback Thursday video looks at that phenomenal world record, which will likely motivate every 200 breaststroker to work harder in the pool tomorrow!
