Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom Scares World Record in 100 Fly at Golden Lanes Meet

AMIENS, France, March 14. AT a star-filled Golden Lanes Meet in Amiens, Florida, Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom stole top billing from the Hungarian Iron Lady Katinka Hosszu with a pair of scintillating swims, including a particularly splendid 100-meter fly.

Hosszu picked up some easy money in the women’s 800-meter freestyle to open the night as she posted an 8:36.46 for the win. She’s been much faster this year with a seventh-ranked 8:29.42 season best from Luxembourg, but she didn’t need that much speed as France’s Charlyne Secrestat placed second in 9:14.18. France’s Celia Clerc touched third overall in 9:15.39.

Hosszu then took third in a star-studded women’s 50-meter free finale. Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom raced her way to the win in 24.82, clearing her previous season best of 24.87 from the Swedish Grand Prix last week and tying her for fifth in the world rankings. The Netherlands’ Femke Heemskerk took second this evening in 25.10 to vault to eighth in the world, while Hosszu wound up third in 25.65.

Hosszu then picked up a full complement of medals with a silver-winning 2:12.12 in the women’s 200-meter back behind Sweden’s Michelle Coleman. Coleman raced her way to a winning time of 2:10.98 in the distance dorsal, while Hungary’s Evelyn Verraszto snared third in the event with a time of 2:15.05.

Sjostrom then doubled up with the 11th-fastest time ever in the women’s 100-meter fly. She blasted the finale with a ridiculously fast time of 56.53 to top the world rankings. Her previous season best had been a 57.41 from the Swedish Grand Prix. The time is only half-a-second off her Swedish record of 56.06 from 2009, that is the second-best of all time behind Dana Vollmer’s world record of 55.98. She split the race 27.11, 29.42.

Hosszu collected her fourth medal of the night with a 59.50, while France’s Camille Muffat wound up third in 59.53 as the only sub-1:00s of the night.

The Netherlands’ Jasper Van Mierlo finished a bit outside the world top 10 in the men’s 50-meter free, currently anchored by a 22.48 from Jimmy Feigen, as Van Mierlo won the splash-and-dash going away with a 22.68 tonight after qualifying with a swift 22.83 in prelims. Compatriot Klos Yoran placed second in 23.79, while Senegal’s Abdoul Niane touched third in 24.05.

France’s Jeremy Stravius cruised to victory in the men’s 200-meter backstroke finale with a time of 2:00.53, dropping five seconds from his comfortable morning swim of 2:05.46. Hungary’s David Verraszto wound up taking second in the finale with a 2:02.24, while Sweden’s Mattias Carlsson earned third in 2:02.71. Stravius doubled up with a 53.90 to win the men’s 100-meter fly. Sweden’s Simon Sjodin (54.38) and France’s Jordan Coelho (54.66) took second and third.

France’s Axel Reymond topped the men’s 1500-meter freestyle in 15:30.28 with The Netherlands’ Maarten Brzoskowski placing second in 15:37.54. Hungary’s Mark Papp snagged third in 15:43.90.

The Netherlands’ Moniek Nijhuis clinched the women’s 100-meter breaststroke title in 1:08.65. France’s Charlotte Bonnet (1:09.63) and Adeline Williams (1:10.70) comprised the rest of the podium. Sweden’s Erik Persson followed with a 1:02.95 to win the men’s 100-meter breaststroke. France’s Jean Dencausse touched second in 1:03.04 with Hungary’s David Verraszto taking third in 1:03.28.
