Kosuke Hagino Smashes Asian Record in 400 IM Short Course

TOKYO, Japan, January 13. AT a local short course meet in Japan, Kosuke Hagino blasted two seconds off the Asian record in the men’s 400-meter IM according to local reports.

Hagino posted a time of 3:56.48, smashing the previous record of 3:58.84 set by Daiya Seto at the Berlin stop of the FINA World Cup last August. That gives Hagino all three IM records in short course, as he already owns the 100 IM Asian record (51.58) and 200 IM Asian record (1:51.50) from his swims at the Tokyo stop of the FINA World Cup last year.

Hagino’s effort in the 400 IM missed Ryan Lochte’s world record 3:55.50 by less than a second. Lochte posted that mark in 2010 in Dubai.

Hagino also owns the Japanese record in the 800 free (7:47.43) and 1500 free (14:32.88) in short course meter competition.

Hagino was just coming down from altitude training in Flagstaff, Ariz., according to his coach. Some of the Japanese contingent had been in Flagstaff the previous three weeks. His coach explained that this was a good start for the year, and that it will help with Hagino’s confidence moving forward this year.

Hagino will be looking for a potentially huge year this year. In 2012, he had his biggest breakthrough with a bronze in the 400 IM at the London Olympics. Then, last summer, he took silver in the 400 free and 200 IM while swimming in six separate events.
